Count Eckhard Christoph von Knuth , Danish: Eggert Christopher von Knuth (born January 15, 1643 in Leizen , † February 25, 1697 in Copenhagen ) was a Mecklenburg-Danish squire, bailiff and privy councilor . As Count von Knuth, he founded the Danish line of the House of Knuth.

Life

Knuth was born into the von Knuth noble family from Mecklenburg. His parents were the cavalry master and provisional officer of the Malchow monastery Jacob Ernst von Knuth (1609–1675) and Elisabeth von Knuth, née Morin († 1689). With his brother Adam Levin he was sent to the Danish royal court as a page.

Knuth completed his education while traveling and was then employed as a chamberlain in the Güstrow residence of Duke Gustav Adolfs . In 1670 he finished his service there and went to Denmark. There he very quickly received an invitation to serve the king as chamberlain, accepted it and stayed at court until 1677. He then became bailiff of the Mecklenburg town of Neukloster and the island of Poel , which had been in Brandenburg ownership for several years. On May 6 of the same year he married Søster Lerche (1658-1729), daughter of the Etatsråd Cornelius Pedersen Lerche and Anna Kirstine Friis'.

In 1680 the brothers Jacob Ernst, Adam Levin and Eckhard Christoph von Knuth were compared. Jacob Ernst was awarded the Leizen estate, Adam Levin Ludorf and Zielow and Eckhard Christoph Melz and Priborn .

In 1684 he became Etatsråd , the next year he was district administrator in Schleswig and bailiff of the Schleswig cathedral chapter. In 1690 he also became bailiff of Kronborg and Frederiksborg . In 1693 he became Konferensråd and knight of the Dannebrogorden with the motto "Nihil nisi honestum" ("nothing without honor"). In 1695 he became a privy councilor.

After a few years of weakness, Knuth died in Copenhagen. His eldest son Adam Christoph von Knuth succeeded him as head of the family .

In Karl Bartsch's sagas, fairy tales, customs from Mecklenburg , Knuth finds in the chapter The Witch of Melz. Mention.
