Eduard Adolf Georg Heinrich von Schlegel , also Schlegell, (born August 24, 1793 in Zeitz , † December 23, 1869 in Erfurt ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Eduard was the son of the Electorate of Saxony's premier lieutenant in the infantry regiment "Electress" Heinrich von Schlegel and his wife Auguste Emilie Eleonore Katharina, née von Troyff .

Military career

Schlegel attended the Knight Academy in Dresden and on April 16, 1809 joined the “King” infantry regiment of the Saxon Army as an ensign . During the Fifth Coalition War against Austria he was wounded in the Battle of Wagram and, after recovering, took part in the battle near Linz . At the beginning of April 1, 1810, Schlegel was promoted to second lieutenant . During the Russian campaign in 1812 he was wounded in a battle near Biala. Schlegel then fought in the battles at Leczna, Wolkowist and Kalisch. After his return he came on October 3, 1813 as a prime lieutenant in the grenadier regiment. During the Wars of Liberation , he first fought alongside France at Wittstock, Großbeeren and Dennewitz and the siege of Torgau. After Saxony had switched to the side of the Allies, Schlegel fought against France from 1814 in the battles at Condé, Oudenaarde , Courlray and Maubeuge .

Schlegel entered Prussian service on May 4, 1815 and was employed as a prime lieutenant in the 27th Infantry Regiment . As leader of the 12th Company he took part in the battle of Ligny , was wounded twice and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. After the end of the war he was promoted to captain and company commander by mid-May 1817 . On March 18, 1824 he was aggregated to the 13th Infantry Regiment and assigned to the VII Army Corps to serve as an adjutant . From November 13, 1829 to March 29, 1833 he was company commander in the 24th Infantry Regiment . Schlegel then joined the 12th Landwehr Regiment as a major and commander of the 2nd Battalion. On March 30, 1836, he was transferred back to the 24th Infantry Regiment, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 22, 1843 and was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd class, at the end of September 1843 . He was promoted to colonel on March 31, 1846, initially with the leadership of the 15th Infantry Regiment, and on October 5, 1846, Schlegel was appointed regiment commander.

In 1849 he took part in the suppression of the Baden Revolution , was commander of the 10th Infantry Brigade from July 21, 1849 and after the end of the revolution was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords. On September 22, 1851 Schlegel became major general and commandant of Magdeburg . When he left Magdeburg he received honorary citizenship. This was followed on April 6, 1854 by his appointment as commander of the 8th Division in Erfurt and on July 13, 1854 by promotion to lieutenant general . On behalf of the German Confederation , Schlegel was commanded to inspect the contingents of Saxony-Weimar, Anhalt, Hessen-Homburg, Schaumburg-Lippe, Lippe and Waldeck in the summer of 1858. During the absence of the commanding general Karl Anton von Hohenzollern , Schlegel was entrusted with the command of the VII Army Corps from November 22, 1858. For the duration of this relationship he received an annual service allowance of 5,000 thalers and was also assigned an apartment in Münster Castle . To celebrate his 50th anniversary in service, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV honored him on April 12, 1859 by being awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 1st class, with oak leaves and swords on a ring in diamonds. In recognition of his services, Schlegel was given the character of General of the Infantry when he left on January 20, 1860 . He died on December 23, 1869 in Erfurt.

Schlegel married Henriette Ludowike Adolfine von Horn (* 1803), a daughter of Lieutenant General von Horn, in Münster on September 6, 1824 . From the marriage, which was divorced on September 27, 1832, the son Georg August Hugo Wolf (1827-1870) emerged, who as a major of the Leib Grenadier Regiment at the wounds of his wound in the battle of Mars-la-Tour passed away.

On April 21, 1833 he married Friederike Ottilie Wilhelmine von der Lehe (1806–1885) in Prenzlau. Their daughter Clara (1842–1874) married the barons Louis Quadt in 1861 and Hüchtenbruck (1825–1871) a son of Lieutenant General Ludwig von Quadt von Hüchtenbruck .
