The paddle steamer unit was built in the Blasewitz shipyard in 1873 . The ship was named Germania with the hull number 13 to set keel and put into service on May 25, the 1,873th It was the third ship with that name. In 1928 it was renamed Lössnitz . In 1950 it was named unit .

After commissioning in 1873, the smooth-deck steamer ran for the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDG) until 1923 . After the cessation of business operations, the ship sailed for the Saxon-Bohemian Steamship Company (SBDA), which was newly founded in 1923 . The white painting of the ships, which was customary from 1926, earned it the name White Fleet . Until the King Albert was built in 1885, it was the company's largest ship with a displacement of 114 tons.

In 1893/94 the ship received a new 2-flame tube boiler from the Übigau shipyard of the Deutsche Elbschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, chain.

In the winter of 1926/27, a steam control machine from Dresdner Maschinenbau und Schiffswerft Uebigau AG with construction number 1829 was installed. The ship received a new wheelhouse. Electric lighting was also installed. A small forward deck saloon was installed between the wheel arches.

On May 1, 1928, the medium wave broke near Merschwitz .

In the winter of 1928/29 it was painted white and went into service under the new name Lössnitz .

On July 14, 1930, the ship struck a leak at Postelwitz after hitting the ground due to low water .

On May 14, 1932, the medium wave broke again.

On July 29, 1933, the ship in Pirna-Posta was thrown into a storm by a tornado on the dam and badly damaged. The Lössnitz then sank. After an emergency repair, it was towed from Bad Schandau to the shipyard.

In April 1944 it was converted into a kitchen and catering ship for the Wehrmacht and given a camouflage finish.

The time after 1945

After the end of the Second World War , the kitchen equipment was dismantled and the ship was still in camouflage.

The SBDA was transferred to public ownership on February 1, 1947 and was given the name VEB Elbeschiffahrt Sachsen . From 1950 to 1957 it belonged to the VEB Deutsche Schiffahrts- und Umschlagszentrale (DSU). After its dissolution, the VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt und Reparaturwerft Dresden was established in 1957 and from 1967 the VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt Dresden .

In 1950 the ship and engine were overhauled. In addition, an upper deck was built. Then the ship went under the new name Einheit . In 1955/56 the ship was lengthened by 3 m. A rear deck saloon was built and the upper deck was extended. In 1957/58 the ship received a new boiler house. At the same time the electrical system was renewed. In 1968 a new wheelhouse was built.

In 1973 the ship celebrated its 100th anniversary of service as the company's second ship after the friendship . During this time it covered a distance of around 1.5 million kilometers. This means that she has circled the equator 37 times equivalent to her mileage. The plans to convert the ship to diesel-electric propulsion were not implemented. On July 12, 1974 there was a boiler damage and the ship was decommissioned. The ship was bought by the HO and used as a floating restaurant in Pillnitz from July 16, 1974 . In 1975 it was renamed Zum Gondelhafen and was temporarily located on the Terrassenufer in Dresden . At the end of the year the restaurant business was stopped and the ship was parked in the port of Dresden-Neustadt from 1976 . Apparently there were efforts to sell the ship. From 1977 the German inland shipping company Berlin was the new owner. In the background was ASIMEX (Asbeck Import Export) Berlin, a subsidiary of KoKo . However, the effort was unsuccessful. In 1978 the ship was renamed unit again. On January 26, 1983, the ship was brought to Aken with the Sch 2523 (today Domarin 10) of the VEB Binnenreederei Berlin and was scrapped from March 11, 1983. No parts were officially preserved.

The steam engine

The steam engine was an oscillating, high-pressure, two-cylinder composite steam engine with injection condensation. It was built by the Swiss engineering company Escher Wyss & Co. in Zurich . The power was 240 hp. A 2-flame tube suitcase boiler with 5 atm steam pressure was installed. In 1894 the boiler was replaced by a 2-flame tube suitcase boiler with 5 atm steam pressure from the chain, Deutsche Elbschiffahrts-Gesellschaft.
