The history of ice hockey in Kempten began at TSV Kottern-St. Mang from Kempten (Allgäu) . For a longer period of time the teams were based at EA Kempten , although there were other teams in Kempten. In 2007, the ESC Kempten club was founded for gaming operations .
history
1950/1951 to 1983
After ice hockey teams already existed in Kempten in 1950, they joined TSV Kottern-St. Mang at, played on natural ice until the artificial ice stadium was completed and in 1976 won the Bavarian State League championship . After this was completed in Kempten in 1977, the ice hockey department of the TSV continued to play from 1978/79 under EA Kempten-Kottern in a structure similar to EA Schongau . After the Bavarian runner-up, the team played for the first time from the 1979/80 season in the higher-class league operations in the Regionalliga Süd .
Since the 1981/82 season , the teams played either in the old 2nd League South or in the Oberliga Süd .
1983 to 2000
In the summer of 1983 the ice hockey department separated from TSV Kottern and became an independent club under the name EA Kempten ( Eissport-Athletik Kempten (im Allgäu) e.V. ). At TSV Kottern, an amateur team remained, which only participated in league play in the lower-class leagues of the Bavarian Ice Sports Association from the 1985/86 season .
After a bankruptcy procedure for EA Kempten had to be survived in the summer of 1987, the team's downgrade was arranged for the 1987/1988 season in the Regionalliga Süd. In the 1993/94 season , the team was relegated from the upper league and was classified in the lower leagues of the Bavarian Ice Sports Association in 1994 as part of the introduction of the DEL . It was not until the 1999/2000 season (Bavarian runners-up 1999) that they were promoted to the Regionalliga Süd again.
At least in the 1987/88 and 1988/89 seasons, SV Cambodunum Kempten also took part in the game operations in the Bavarian regional league , which also included a women's team until the 1990/91 season.
2000 to 2002
As in 2000/01 the financial problems in the EA Kempten were getting bigger, has become the third club EA Kempten and the TSV Kottern the Hockey Club (EC) Kempten founded.
For the 2001/02 season, the EC Kempten took part in addition to the other two clubs with a senior team in the lowest league of the Bavarian Ice Sports Association , the Bavarian District League, but withdrew them after one season.
2002 to 2004
In spring 2002 EA Kempten went under insolvency administration and the professional team was outsourced to Kempten Eisbären GmbH , which took part in the 2002/03 Oberliga . The youngsters and the amateur team continued to play under the EA Kempten club.
After the professional team was relegated from the league in 2003/04 , the plan was to complete the bankruptcy proceedings for EA Kempten by June 30, 2004 and to report a senior team for the Bayern League. But this attempt failed.
From 2004/05
In the 2004/05 season, the ice hockey department of TSV Kottern reported in addition to their senior team, which took part in the fifth-class Bavarian regional league, also the youth teams of EA Kempten under their name to play.
Between 2007 and 2017
In April 2007, the end of the sport of ice hockey at TSV Kottern became known. At the beginning of May 2007, a new club, the ESC Kempten, was founded in order to be able to continue playing in the 2007/08 season. The association now has 240 members. (As of September 12, 2012)
In the first season, the ESC Kempten took part with its senior team in the sixth-class Bavarian district league and with the junior teams in the game and became champion of the district league West without loss and was thus promoted to the state league. ESC Kempten lost the final of the Bavarian Regional League Championship in two games against SC Gaißach and was thus runner-up in the Bavarian Regional League 2007/2008. In the following season 2008/2009 the team of ESC Kempten took part in the Landesliga West and finished 7th in the preliminary round of Group West. In the subsequent round of relegation, the ESC managed to stay in the league and took 5th place. In 2009/2010, the club narrowly missed the promotion round in the Landesliga West as fifth. In the following round of relegation of the Landesliga Süd / West, ESC Kempten took 1st place. In the next season 2010/2011, the ESC Kempten was able to complete the newly composed Landesliga Süd / West with the 4th place of 15 teams. Of the old teams of the Landesliga West, ESC Kempten takes 2nd place behind EA Schongau. Again the ESC in 2011/2012 in the Landesliga Süd / West with the 5th place out of 14 teams just missed the play-offs for the Bayernliga.
The 2012/2013 season of the Landesliga Süd / West with 15 teams ended with the ESC Kempten in 4th place. After the 2010/2011 season, this is the best placement by ESC Kempten in the club's young history. In the 2013/2014 season, the Sharks finished the round with a 9th place out of 14 teams.
In the 2014/2015 season, ESC Kempten finished the round with a 10th place out of 14 teams.
In the 2015/2016 season, the ESC finished the preliminary round in 5th place. In the relegation round, the ESC took 6th place out of 8 teams and stayed on the green table as a replacement for EC Oberstdorf in the coming season in the regional league.
Since the 2017/18 season
At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, the club was restructured and in the following three years reached the promotion round to the Bayern League. The ascent was achieved in spring 2020. The recurring sporting successes sparked a new ice hockey euphoria in the city of Kempten, which was also reflected in a significant increase in the number of spectators (twice over 2000 spectators).
