The Saxon Railway Museum is a museum for historical railway vehicles in Chemnitz . It is located on the site of the former Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf depot .

history

The Saxon Railway Museum is located on the site of the former railway depot for freight locomotives at the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf station . Until the shutdown of the last steam locomotives in 1988, this was responsible for their maintenance and repair.

After the railway depot was closed in 1992, the Saxon Railway Museum Association took over the existing, listed buildings. The museum has two 26- person ring locomotive sheds with 20 m turntables . In addition, there is a coaling system with high bunkers and sanding systems , water cranes , a functional axle sink and the other facilities of a functional railway depot for steam locomotives.

The exhibition shows the development of the railways in Saxony and especially in the Chemnitz region. In addition to an extensive inventory of steam, diesel and electric locomotives , the museum also has an extensive collection of operational light rail vehicles .

For the TV film Go West - Freedom at Any Price from 2010, the outdoor facilities of the museum served as the backdrop for a Czech freight yard.

In the Railway Museum for the 4th Saxon State Exhibition in 2020, the "Railway Showcase" will be set up as an additional exhibition .

Exhibition exhibits

Many of the locomotives on display are on loan from private individuals, the Dresden Transport Museum or the Nuremberg Transport Museum . In 2009 the stock comprised 18 steam locomotives, 16 diesel locomotives and three electric locomotives as well as 40 passenger and freight cars. The museum shows the steam locomotives 38 205 , 43 001 , 75 515 and 86 001 , the diesel locomotives V 180 141 , 219 003 , V 60 1001 and the electric locomotives 254 059 and E 44 045 . As a special vehicle for the museum's collection also includes a Tatra 141 with Culemeyer - road scooter .

The operating license of the association's own 50 3648 expired in spring 2009, the locomotive was then restored to working order by November 2015 and has since been available for special trips again. At the end of August each year there is a large boiler house festival with a locomotive parade.

Site plan of the field railway in the Saxon Railway Museum

In 1992 the field railway group was founded in the Saxon Railway Museum to demonstrate the former importance of the field railways in Saxony . On the fallow land east of the railway museum, some of which were used for storage, a field railway network with a 600 mm gauge with a station, locomotive shed and workshop was built.

In 1996, when enough collected track material from stocks of mostly surrounding field railways was available, track construction began. From then on, they continued to build on the route. Construction of the museum station began in January 1997, and the foundation stone for the locomotive shed was laid on January 3, 1998.

For financial reasons, the association was transferred to the Saxon Railway Museum in 1999. By renting a neighboring locksmith's shop, the area was expanded by a few exhibition rooms in 2002.

On November 25, 2005, half of the current route was inaugurated. The field railway continued to grow in length until 2006. The remaining part of the route was inaugurated on April 8, 2006.
