Elias Ambühl (born March 26, 1992 in Masein ) is a Swiss freestyle skier . He starts in the freestyle disciplines Slopestyle and Big Air .

Career

Ambühl has been participating in the AFP World Tour competitions since 2009 . In January 2009, he won his first victory in slopestyle at the Austrian Freeski Open in Mayrhofen . At the start of the 2009/10 season, he finished the freestyle.ch in Zurich in second place in the Big Air. In the rest of the season he was in the Big Air at the Winter Dew Tour at Mount Snow and the Jon Olsson Invitational in Åre to third place and second place at Barcelona Big Air. At the Winter X Games 2010 in Aspen he won the bronze medal in Big Air. In the 2010/11 season he won Big Air at the Budapest Fridge Festival, Big Air at the European Freeski Open in Laax and Slopestyle at Jon Olsson Invitational in Åre. Also in the season he came second in Big Air at King of Style in Stockholm , in Slopestyle at the Winter Dew Tour in Killington , at the Austrian Freeski Open in Kaprun and in Big Air at the Frostgun Invitational in Val Thorens . At the 2011 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Park City , he finished 12th in slopestyle. The following season he won Big Air at freestyle.ch in Zurich, the Fridge Festival in Budapest and the King of Style in Stockholm. He made his World Cup debut in January 2013 in Copper Mountain , which he finished in 46th place in slopestyle. In the same month he won the bronze medal in Big Air at the Winter X Games 2013 in Aspen . At the Freestyle Skiing World Championships 2013 in Voss , he took 43rd place in slopestyle. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he took third place in Big Air at the Fridge Festival in Vienna . In his first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , he reached 22nd place in the first-ever slopestyle competition. In the 2014/15 season he won Big Air at the Toyota One Hit Wonder in Thredbo , at the Frostgun Invitational in Val-d'Isère and in Slopestyle at the SFR Freestyle Tour in Vars . At the 2015 Winter X Games in Aspen , he won bronze in Big Air. At the end of the season, he took third place in Big Air at the AFP World Tour Final in Whistler and thus achieved second place in the AFP World Tour Big Air ranking. As in the previous year, he won the bronze medal in Big Air at the Winter X Games 2016 in Aspen . In the following year he took 12th place in Big Air at the Winter X Games 2017 and at the X Games Norway 2017 fifth in Hafjell . In the 2017/18 season he came in three top ten placements, including first place in the Big Air in Milan , 19th place in the overall World Cup and second place in the Big Air World Cup. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he finished ninth in slopestyle.

World record in backward skiing

On February 27, 2017 Elias Ambühl set a new world speed record in backward skiing in Arosa . Ambühl reached 131.23 km / h on the slope from Weisshorn towards Carmennahütte in training for the record run that was canceled due to the weather . He exceeded the record of the Norwegian Anders Backe , who backed down a ski jump at 128.7 km / h in 2012 .
