Princess Maria Elisabeth Maximiliana Ludovika Amalie Franziska Sophia Leopoldine Anna Baptista Xaveria Nepomucena of Saxony (born February 4, 1830 in Dresden , † August 14, 1912 in Stresa ) was Princess of Savoy-Carignan and Duchess of Genoa by marriage.

Life

Princess Elisabeth was the second daughter of the Saxon King Johann I (1801–1873) and his wife, Princess Amalie Auguste of Bavaria (1801–1877). This was the fourth child from the second marriage of King Maximilian I Joseph with Princess Karoline Friederike Wilhelmine von Baden and the twin sister of Queen Elisabeth of Prussia . Elisabeth's paternal grandparents were Prince Maximilian of Saxony and Princess Caroline of Bourbon-Parma .

On April 22, 1850, the 20-year-old Maria Elisabeth Maximiliana married the Duke of Genoa, Prince Ferdinand Maria von Savoyen-Carignan (1822–1855), second son of King Karl Albert of Sardinia-Piedmont and Princess Maria Theresia of Austria -Tuscany . The marriage had two children:

After the early death of her husband (February 10, 1855), Elisabeth entered into an improper marriage on October 4, 1856 in Agliè with her chamberlain, the Italian nobleman Nicolò Giuseppe Effisio, Marchese Rapallo (1825-1882). The couple secretly married before the official funeral period was over. This annoyed Elizabeth's brother-in-law Viktor Emanuel II so much that he de facto exiled her and forbade her to see her two children. However, they were later reunited. Elisabeth's second marriage, which was described as not happy, remained childless. In 1882 her second husband committed suicide. In 1910 Elisabeth suffered a stroke , after which her health deteriorated rapidly. She died on August 14, 1912 at the age of 82 in Stresa on Lake Maggiore .
