Life

Schustekh came from an old Hungarian noble family, which became extinct with his death. His early inclination to become a soldier prompted his father to have him educated at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. He left the academy on May 8, 1770, and joined the Hungarian line regiment Count Karoly as an ensign , where he was promoted to second lieutenant in April 1775 . On July 5, 1776, he changed as a lieutenant in the Chevauleger regiment of Prince von Löwenstein, which was used in the war against Prussia at the time with the Loudon army near Leitmeritz . It fell into Prussian captivity in the first days of August and was not exchanged until the following year. On November 1, 1787 he was promoted to Rittmeister in the Chevauleger regiment of Richecourt and during this time he married Regina Freiinn von Schröffl and Mannsperg. His regiment was in Moravia for the next two years and was ordered to Galicia in the spring of 1790 . From April 16, 1790 he led a squadron in the cavalry regiment named after the new owner FML Baron Karaczay. In January 1793 he marched with his regiment to join Prince Coburg's army in the Netherlands . In the battle of Herve on March 4th under Prince Ferdinand von Württemberg with his Chevaulegers on the Strait of Liège , he distinguished himself so much that the French had to evacuate Aachen on March 5th. For this mission he was awarded the baron status by the emperor on April 29, 1797 with the name of Hervé. In the battle of Famars (23 May 1793) his squadron covered the successful attack of the English horsemen between the villages of Querenain and Artre. On March 11, 1794, he was transferred to the staff of the Quartermaster General and promoted to major on March 16 . On May 22, 1794, his attacks on the villages of Blandain and Templeuve played a decisive role in the victory in the Battle of Tournai .

In the campaign of 1795 he led the avant-garde in the Corps of the FML Erbach near Mindelheim for several months . The success in holding the entrenchments between Angerbach and Kaiserswerth and the prevention of the enemy crossing at Uerdingen was primarily awarded by the Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Clerfayt to the troops of Schustekh. On May 11, 1795 he was subsequently awarded the Maria Theresa Order for his award from Herve. On December 12, 1795 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and the following year on April 29, at Wurmser's suggestion, he was appointed colonel and chief of the 8th Hussar Regiment.

In the spring of 1798 he went to the army in Italy and distinguished himself on March 26, 1799 in the battle of Legnano . On April 5, 1799, his timely intervention in the Battle of Magnano brought the decision. Schustekh's troops were placed across the Adige and had rolled up the right flank of the French Grenier division and pursued the enemy over Raldon and Varese . On June 22, 1799 he stood in front of Modena and later took part in the blockade of Genoa . On June 10, 1800 he fought at Casteggio and on June 14 at the battle of Marengo . He was wounded and promoted to major general on October 28, 1800 (rank on November 24, 1800). After the Peace of Lunéville he took over the leadership of a brigade in Bukovina .

In the next campaign of 1805 he served in the corps of the FML Baron Kienmayer and led the Arrièregarde back across the Inn . In the retreat battles near Ried on October 30th and Haag on October 31st, he proved himself again and was appointed field marshal lieutenant on April 14th, 1808. In the campaign of 1809 he led a division in the association of the 5th Army Corps and took part in the Battle of Abensberg on April 20 , after the withdrawal he received the order from FML Hiller to defend the town of Riedau (May 1) with the rearguard . With his troops, he was able to stop the pursuing Bavarians and French Molitor Division for a short time a few days earlier during the battle of Neumarkt . He then had to retreat from Massena's advance troops and return to the plain near Reith not far from Ebelsberg , where the Radetzky brigade meanwhile threw itself against the enemy. Schustekh threw the French into the left flank and was able to continue his orderly retreat behind the Traun . With an independent corps of 10,000 men, he then secured the left bank of the Danube from Linz to Neuaigen until the day of the Battle of Wagram (July 5). After the war, he was transferred to the position of cavalry inspector in Prague and on February 18, 1810, he was appointed second owner of the Archduke Johann No. 1 dragoon regiment. In the war of 1813 he led the organization of the Landwehr in Bohemia . In 1814 he took over the general command in Moravia.

On January 2nd, 1817 he was appointed privy councilor and on May 22nd, 1820 he finally took over the position of the commanding general in Transylvania . He died in Sibiu in 1827 at the age of 75 after a short illness.
