Epichnellen is a former municipality in what is today the area of the Förtha district of the Gerstungen municipality in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . From 1945 Epichnellen was initially part of Förtha and was incorporated into Marksuhl in 1996.

location

The district of Epichnellen is located about four kilometers northeast of the town of Marksuhl and about 14 kilometers (as the crow flies ) from the district town of Bad Salzungen .

history

Epichnellen first appeared in 1378 as Ebchenellen and Epchinelne, then in 1402 as Appcheneln, 1522 as Epfigenelenn, 1527 as Epgenel, 1536 as Ebgeneln, lastly in 1571 as Eppicheneln. This name is to be interpreted from "above Ellen", thus "above (Ober) ellen." To the north of the locality numerous pits for the extraction of copper ore were built since the 15th century. The ores were initially smelted at the smelters in Stedtfeld and Neuenhof and Attchenbach near Eckardtshausen . Mining continued into the 1950s.

Epichnellen belonged to the patrimonial Lauchröden until 1850 . Around 1500 the Lords of Reckrodt had acquired extensive property and income in the Eltetal. They sat as lords of the castle on the nearby Brandenburg near Lauchröden. From 1520 they were in financial difficulties and had to cede their properties in Unkeroda, Neuenhof, Epichnellen, Wolfsburg and Sättelstädt step by step to the electoral administration.

The place was schooled and parish after Förtha. In 1879, based on the census of 1875, statistical information on the location was published for the first time. Epichnellen had 7 houses with 43 inhabitants that year. The size of the field was 221.2 ha, of which courtyards and gardens 2.4 ha, meadows 17.6 ha, arable land 112.7 ha, forest 69.3 ha, ponds, streams and rivers 0.6 ha, on paths, Trifte, wasteland and fruit plantations accounted for 18.9 hectares. The livestock of the place: 16 horses, 47 cattle, 195 sheep, 34 pigs and 3 goats, also 4 beehives.

Epichnellen was incorporated into Förtha on November 1, 1945 and forms a merged town center with it. When Förtha was incorporated into Marksuhl in 1996, Epichnellen became part of the Marksuhl community. This in turn was incorporated into Gerstungen on July 6, 2018.
