Erik Stenbock

Erik Gustafson Stenbock Freiherr zu Kronobäck and Öresten , since 1651 Count zu Bogesund , ( Swedish Erik Gustafson Stenbock, formerly till Kronobäck och Öresten, greve till Bogesund ; * 1612 at Göksholm Palace ; † February 11, 1659 in Copenhagen ) was a Swedish major general .

Life

family

Erik was a member of the Swedish noble family Stenbock . His parents were the Swedish Councilor Gustaf Stenbock (1575–1629) and Beata Margareta Brahe (1583–1645). Thus, on his father's side , he was related to the Swedish royal family through his great-aunt, Queen Katharina Stenbock (1535–1621), and was descended from Duke Otto II of Braunschweig-Harburg (1528–1603) on his mother's side . The Swedish field marshal , imperial admiral and statesman Gustaf Otto Stenbock (1614–1685) was his brother.

He married Catharina von Schwerin in Spantekow in 1637, and in 1656, again in Spantekow, with Occa Johanna Riperda . A total of 14 children emerged from both marriages, of which individual daughters were prominently married:

  • Magdalena (1649–1727), ⚭ 1667 in Stockholm with Count Bengt Oxenstierna (1623–1702)
  • Hedwig Eleonora (1655–1714), ⚭ 1689 in Spantekow Count Nicodemus Tessin (1654–1728)

Career

In 1631 Stenbock advanced from ensign to lieutenant captain of the Livguard . As such, he took part in the battle of Lützen on the German theater of war . He only accompanied the funeral procession of King Gustav Adolf to Wolgast . He was promoted to colonel in the Västmanland regiment in 1634 . After Major General Johan Lilliehöök was injured , he took command of the city during the siege of Landsberg an der Warthe in 1639 . In 1642 he was wounded himself in the battle of Leipzig .

In 1643 he was promoted to major general of the people of war in Livonia , where he became assistant to the governor general , and from 1645 to 1649 he himself was governor of Riga . From 1650 he was Reichsrat. Together with his brothers he was raised to the Swedish count status in 1651 and introduced to the count class (No. 12) of the knighthood . From 1651 to 1654 he was Governor General of Ingermanland , Karelia and Kexholm and from 1655 to 1656 General Commander in Swedish Pomerania . He was then from 1656 to 1658 governor of Halland and 1657 Lagmann in Västernorrland , Lappmarken and Härjedalen . Also in 1657 he advanced to Reichsfeldzeugmeister and in the same year took part in the war with Denmark in the Battle of Hjärtum, where he was victorious. He died during the siege of Copenhagen.
