Ernest "Ernie" Pieterse (born July 4, 1938 in Parow ; † November 1, 2017 in Johannesburg ) was a South African racing car driver .

Career

Pieterse was one of the most successful touring car drivers on the South African saloon car scene in the late 1950s . In 1958 he finished third in an Alfa Romeo in the Rand 9 Hours . In 1961 he celebrated his first successes in the monoposto with victories in Kyalami and the Grand Prix of Rhodesia .

At the 1962 Grand Prix of South Africa , he made his debut in the World Motor Championship . With a private Lotus 21 , he finished tenth, 11 laps behind winner Graham Hill . In the same year he won the South African monoposto championship, in which he participated regularly until the end of 1964.

After he clearly missed qualifying for the home Grand Prix in 1965 ( he retired in 1963 with engine failure), he retired from racing.
