Karl Eduard Ernst Hoffbauer , von Hoffbauer since 1890 (born April 2, 1836 in Warburg , † December 10, 1905 in Berlin ) was a Prussian general of the artillery .

Life

Ernst was the son of the Prussian district court director Friedrich Hoffbauer († 1860) and his wife Bertha, née Lohrmann († 1873).

Military career

Hoffbauer initially received private tuition in Büren and attended high school in Herford . On October 1, 1853, he joined the 8th Artillery Regiment of the Prussian Army as a gunner and graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School from October 1854 to June 1857 . After graduating, he was appointed artillery officer as an extra-secondary lieutenant in early November 1857 . From July 1859 to February 1862 he was adjutant of the riding department , rose to prime lieutenant and was commanded from October 1863 for further training at the war academy . During this command he was a spectator during the war against Denmark in 1864 at the bombardment of the Düppeler Schanzen .

In the mobilization on the occasion of the German war Hoffbauer in 1866 commanded initially to replace the battery of the 1st Reserve Field Artillery Regiment and led in the main campaign , the 12-pounder battery in the fighting in Hammelburg , Helmstadt and Roßbrunn . Awarded the Crown Order IV. Class with Swords, he was transferred to the war school in Erfurt as a teacher at the war school in Erfurt after the end of the war under position à la suite of his regiment . As a captain , he was assigned to the General Staff at the beginning of August 1867 . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , he was assigned to the artillery shooting school before the peace treaty in mid-April 1871 and taught at the artillery and engineering school from September 1871. Left in this position, he was transferred to Magdeburg Field Artillery Regiment No. 4 in mid-August 1872 . Hoffbauer rose to major at the end of December 1873 , was appointed director of the artillery and engineering school in mid-September 1874 under the position of his regiment à la suite and was also a member of the examination commission for prime lieutenants of the artillery from October 1874 to July 1875. With the appointment as regular staff officer in the 2nd Baden Field Artillery Regiment No. 30 , he returned to the troop service on June 22, 1875 and in mid-December 1876 received command of the 2nd Division in the 1st Brandenburg Field Artillery Regiment (General-Feldzeugmeister ) No. 3 in Jüterbog . This was followed as a lieutenant colonel from July 12, 1881 to March 13, 1884 as a commander of the 1st Posenen Field Artillery Regiment No. 20 . Subsequently, Hoffbauer was appointed department head of the artillery examination commission under position à la suite of the regiment and was promoted to colonel in mid-April 1885 . From April 17, 1888, he led the 5th Field Artillery Brigade in Poznan and became major general in mid-September 1888 .

“In recognition of his excellent behavior in front of the enemy, as well as his good services in peacetime,” Kaiser Wilhelm I elevated him to the hereditary Prussian nobility on September 20, 1890 .

With his promotion to Lieutenant General Hoffbauer received on May 16, 1891 the rank and fees of division commander. Three months later he was appointed inspector of the field artillery. In September 1894 he received the Order of the Crown First Class with Swords, on May 30, 1896, he was awarded the General of the Artillery and on the occasion of the festival in January 1899 with the Grand Cross of the Red Eagle Order with Oak Leaves. In the spring of 1899 Hoffbauer chaired a commission for the revision of the drill regulations for the field artillery, to which the later Generals Dulitz and Gallwitz also belonged. family

Hoffbauer had married Emma Schneider (1846–1920) on December 30, 1873 in Hamburg . The marriage resulted in the son Ernst (1874-1915), who had died as a Prussian major during the First World War at Souain , and the daughter Anna (* 1877), who married the Prussian major general Felix von Lewinski (1869-1936).
