Albufeira

history

Albufeira has a history of around 2000 years. The Romans called it Baltum or Balteus . The Arabic name for the area wasالبحيرة / al-buḥaira  / 'the lake'. The city built on the rock was considered impregnable because of its location. The Moors could only be from Afonso III in 1249 . be evicted from the city. As a result of the Lisbon earthquake , the city was almost completely destroyed in 1755. A tsunami flooded the lower city. In 1823, Albufeira was surrounded and set on fire by the Miguelista guerrillas under Remexido during the bloody clashes between liberals and Miguelistas . Part of the population was massacred . Today almost nothing reminds of the old city. Where it once stood, at the highest point in the city ( Rua da Bateria ), today the old town hall, a hospital and a bell tower are located. The previous small town ( Vila ) Albufeira was elevated to a city ( Cidade ) in 1986 .

Albufeira train station

traffic

The place is connected to Lagos , Faro and Vila Real de Santo António by the Linha do Algarve railway line . There is a connection to the A22 motorway (Via Infante-de-Sagres) to Lisbon and via Faro to Spain .

Albufeira is integrated into the national long-distance bus network of Rede Expressos with two stops . International connections are also offered here.

Local public transport is guaranteed by the urban bus company GIRO - Transportes Urbanos. The five color-coded lines usually run through the district every 30 minutes, starting and ending at the city bus station ( Terminal Rodoviário , officially Estação Central de Camionagem ). Single trips, day tickets and multiple tickets are possible on the rechargeable tickets.

economy

The economy is mainly supported by tourism. In addition to the around 30,000 inhabitants, there are around 300,000 holiday guests in the warm season who live in over 160 hotels and holiday complexes. The city is connected to Praia do Peneco by a tunnel. There are also stairs between the former castle and the beach and beach access through the hotel complex.

  • Cerro da Vila, the old town district
  • Alcantarilha in the neighboring district of Silves: The walls of the mortuary chapel of the village church are "decorated" with 1500 human skull bones.
  • Guia : This is the Zoomarine tourist attraction .
