Eugen Hahn (General)
Eugen Hahn (born July 22, 1884 in Bösingen , † August 10, 1938 in Heidelberg ) was a German lieutenant general and commander of the 5th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht .
Life
Hahn joined the Infantry Regiment "Alt-Württemberg" (3rd Württembergisches) No. 121 of the Württemberg Army on October 1, 1902 as a flag junior and advanced to lieutenant until the end of January 1904 . From 1909 to 1911 he served as an adjutant of the 1st battalion, then rose to regimental adjutant and was promoted in this capacity to first lieutenant on January 27, 1912 . After the beginning of the First World War, he advanced with his regiment via neutral Luxembourg on Longwy and took part in the conquest of the fortress. This was followed by fighting in the Argonne , northern France and Belgium. Promoted to captain on November 8, 1914 , Hahn and his regiment moved to the Eastern Front at the end of the month and was involved in combat operations against the Russian Army in the coming months . At the end of March 1915, he was transferred as General Staff Officer to the XIII. (Royal Württemberg) Army Corps . After he had already received both classes of the Iron Cross , Hahn was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Military Merit in this position on June 4, 1915 .
In September 1915 Hahn returned to the Western Front with the General Command and in 1916 became First General Staff Officer in the staff of the 26th Division (1st Royal Württembergische) . After fighting on the Somme , near Arras and in Flanders , his large unit moved to Italy, was involved in the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo and returned to France in early January 1918 in preparation for the German spring offensive , where he remained until the end of the war.
After the Armistice in Compiègne , Hahn worked in the Reichswehr Ministry from 1919 and was transferred to the Reichswehr Rifle Regiment 113 on July 31, 1920. When he was appointed company commander , he was transferred to Infantry Regiment 13 on January 1, 1921 . This was followed by a three-year assignment with the staff of Group Command 2 in Kassel from October 1922 and at the same time he acted as a liaison officer of the army at the Baltic Sea naval station . Hahn rose in the meantime on January 1, 1924 with RDA from April 1, 1923 to major and then worked in the Army Training Department (T 4) of the Army Office again in the Ministry of Defense. On February 1, 1929 Hahn was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on October 1, 1929 as commander of the III. Battalion in the 13th (Württemberg) Infantry Regiment transferred to Ulm . He was the commander of this regiment from October 1, 1931 to September 30, 1933 and was promoted to colonel on January 1, 1932 . After serving as the commander of Ulm, Hahn was promoted to major general on October 1, 1934, commander of the newly formed 5th Infantry Division . As such, he rose to lieutenant general on August 1, 1936 and died two years later in Heidelberg.
