FEI Nations Cup 2019 (dressage riding)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FEI Nations Cup 2019 in dressage (2019 FEI Dressage Nations Cup) was the seventh season of the Nations Cup for dressage riders .

Course of the tournament series

The Nations Cup grew to eight stages in 2019: the CDIO from Järvenpää (Finland) was added, and the CDIO tournament in the Netherlands moved to Geesteren for a year.

The rules did not change compared to 2018. The tournaments were organized on CDIO at a 3 *, 4 * or 5 * level. Three different tendering modes for the Nations Cup were available to the organizers:

  • The result of the Grand Prix de Dressage (three or four riders per team) was added to the results from the Grand Prix Spécial (two riders per team) and Grand Prix Freestyle (one or two riders per team),
  • The former Olympic team competition mode: Grand Prix de Dressage and Grand Prix Spécial counted for the Nations Cup or
  • Different tender (only outside Europe, approval by the FEI required)

The Nations Cup season kicked off in mid-March 2019 and ended at the end of July 2019. The rating points were allocated based on the placement, staggered according to the category of the tournament (the winning team received 5 * 15 points in a CDIO, with a CDIO 3 *, however, 10 points).

The mode of determining the team result at the individual Nations Cups differed depending on the stage: In many cases, the placement of the rider decided the number of points: one point for first place, two for second, etc. The team with the lowest won Result of the Nations Cup. Sometimes, however, an addition of the percentage results (minus any deletion results) was also used.

United States

The 2019 Nations Cup season starts with the US Nations Cup in Wellington , Florida. The event was part of the multi-week dressage tournament series Global Dressage Festival , at the same time as the CDIO 3 *, a Nations Cup for U25 dressage riders (CDIOU25) was held here. The CDIO took place from March 12th to 17th, 2019.

At the Wellington Nations Cup, special regulations are always used: the teams not only competed at Grand Prix level. Instead came the riders in the Grand Prix de Dressage either and in the Grand Prix Spécial or in the Prix St. Georges and the Intermediaire I at. In order to take into account the difference in difficulty, the results of the Grand Prix Tour were increased by a factor of 1.5 percent per rider.

After no Central or South American nations competed in the previous year, the Nations Cup was well filled in the year of the Pan American Games in Lima . The United States and the Canadians just behind made the victory among themselves, the other three teams followed by a clear margin.

France

Two months after his North American special test, the first European stage of the Nations Cup was on. The French Nations Cup tournament was held in Compiègne . The tournament, advertised as CDIO 5 *, took place from May 16 to 19, 2019.

The victory in the CDIO 5 * Grand Prix went to Patrik Kittel and Well Done de la Roche with 77.283 percent . With a little less than one percent gap, Carl Hester and his gelding Delicato followed in the individual ranking . In the team classification, the signs were reversed after the first test: with places two, five and seven, the British got 14 points. The Swedes were the only team to keep up, they followed closely behind with 17 points.

Gareth Hughes won the Grand Prix Spécial with 77.170 percent. Patrik Kittel and Carl Hester were rated over 75 percent, all other riders followed with results below 72 percent. In the Grand Prix Freestyle, the strongest couple of the Dutch team, Emmelie Scholtens with the black stallion Desperado (81.585%) won ahead of the only German rider in Compiègne, Helen Langehanenberg, with Damsey FRH (80.775%). Mads Hendeliowitz had withdrawn his start in the freestyle. However, this had little effect on the Swedish team result, as he had already clearly put the discard result in the Grand Prix. Great Britain was able to maintain its lead of three points over the Grand Prix Spécial and Freestyle and thus won the Nations' Cup endowed with 25,000 euros.

As in the previous year, Switzerland had sent a team to Compiègne. Just behind the hosts, the Swiss riders came in sixth. Birgit Wientzek Pläge was the only Swiss woman to achieve results of more than 70 percent in both of her exams.

Denmark

The third stage of the 2019 season was the Nations Cup of Denmark. For the third time in a row the CDIO 4 * national prize tournament was held in Uggerhalne in Aalborg Municipality . The tournament took place from 23 to 26 May 2019 on the grounds of the Uggerhalne Sportsride Club, where the Danish dressage rider Andreas Helgstrand is also based.

Uggerhalne changed the regulations in 2019, here too all three tests at Grand Prix level were included in the national ranking. The placements of the individual riders were counted as points. The starting field included three Scandinavian teams as well as teams from Great Britain and Germany. In the Grand Prix de Dressage, Daniel Bachmann Andersen and the stallion Don Olymbrio clearly won with 77.652 percent . With two percent less, Cathrine Dufour and her now nine-year-old young horse Bohemian came in second. After this test, Denmark (11 points) was ahead of Sweden (13 points).

The majority of the strongest pairs of the nations started in the Grand Prix Spécial. Between Bachmann Andersen (78.809%) and Dufour (76.745%) Therese Nilshagen came in second. The Swede, who lives in Germany, achieved a result of 77.362 percent with the black stallion Dante Weltino OLD . In the previously organized Grand Prix Freestyle, the decision about victory was close: Agnete Kirk Thinggaard from Denmark won with 77.480 percent, the Swede Minna Telde followed with her 14-year-old gelding Isac in second place with a smooth 77 percent.

In the Nations Cup, Denmark was able to maintain its lead thanks to the individual victories in all three tests. Sweden came in second, four points behind. The best rider of the German team in third place was Fabienne Müller-Lütkemeier with the 12-year-old Fabregaz . Michael Klimke came here for his second Nations Cup appearance this season.

Netherlands

A good two months before the European Championships in Rotterdam , the Netherlands held their Nations Cup tournament. This was not organized in Rotterdam, as usual, but moved to the CSI Twente in Tubbergen- Geesteren. The Nations Cup tournament, which had less prize money than in the other years and was therefore only carried out as a CDIO 3 *, took place from June 17 to 23, 2019.

As in the previous year, Edward Gal won the Grand Prix de Dressage (78.304%) with Zonik . Two riders came close to his results: Juliette Ramel with her gelding Buriel (2nd place, 78,000%) and Therese Nilshagen with her black stallion Dante Weltino (3rd place, 77.739%). In the team competition, thanks to three riders, the Netherlands were among the top six with 11 points in the lead, Sweden followed within striking distance with 13 points. The four other teams were already beaten at this point with 30 or more points without a chance.

In the Grand Prix Spécial there was also a duel between Sweden (1st and 3rd place) and the Netherlands (2nd and 4th place). With a lead of almost four percent, Juliette Ramel won here with a result of 79.915 percent. In the Grand Prix Freestyle, five pairs achieved results of over 75 percent. Edward Gal and his stallion Zonik won here with 82.250 percent, ahead of Therese Nilshagen (81.495%) and Anne Meulendijks (79.875). In the final result of the Nations Cup, the Netherlands remained two-point ahead of the team from Sweden.

Finland

For the first time in 2019, Finland hosted the Nations Cup for dressage riders. The venue for the Finnish Nations Cup tournament, at which a show jumping Nations Cup was held at the same time, was the Ratsastuskeskus Aino (Aino Equestrian Center) in Järvenpää . The tournament started on July 4th and ended on July 7th, 2019.

The Nations Cup was advertised as CDIO 4 *, which is significantly more endowed than the Dutch stage. Nevertheless, only three nations sent a team to the south of Finland, which is remote for the Central European dressage sport: Finland, Sweden and Estonia. Since the Nations Cup regulations require at least four teams to take part, no points were awarded in Järvenpää for the overall ranking of the tournament series.

The CDIO 4 * comprised only two tests, both of which were included in the Nations Cup result: the Grand Prix de Dressage on July 5th and the Grand Prix Spécial one day later. After the Grand Prix, Finland was in the lead, benefiting in particular from Henri Ruoste's result. With Roble , a 16-year-old gelding owned by Christian Zimmermann , he was the only rider to achieve a result of over 70 percent in both tests. In the most demanding test of dressage, the Grand Prix Spécial, Sweden benefited from the better overall performance level of its team. The Swedish team caught up with the 1.435 percent deficit and won by more than three percent.

Sweden

The 2019 season came to a close with three Nations Cup tournaments on three consecutive weekends. The first of these three tournaments was the Falsterbo Horse Show, which was held from July 11th to 14th, 2019 in Skanör med Falsterbo . The Swedish Nations Cup tournament in dressage was advertised as CDIO 5 *.

In the individual ranking of the Grand Prix, Daniel Bachmann Andersen with the stallion Zack clearly stood out, with 77.500 percent he won the test. Patrik Kittel came in second with Well Done de La Roche (75.196 percent), all other participants got results below 73 percent. At this point in time, Sweden was leading the team with 16 points. The German team (whose riders finished fifth to eighth in the Grand Prix) was second with 18 points.

The tournament Sunday began with the Grand Prix Spécial of the CDIO tour. The Swedish riders Patrik Kittel (73.532%) and Juliette Ramel (72.766%) came in first two places, third place went to the German rider Frederic Wandres (71.149%). Matthias Alexander Rath had his first Nations Cup start since 2015, and came fourth in the Grand Prix Spécial with the Hengst Foundation with 70.234%. In the Grand Prix Freestyle that followed, Daniel Bachmann Andersen won again, this time even more clearly with 85.020 percent and a lead of over seven percent. The best German couple in the Nations Cup, Jan-Dirk Gießelmann and 15-year-old gelding Real Dancer FRH came second in the freestyle with 77.575 percent.

Despite Daniel Bachmann Andersen's performance, Denmark only came fourth in the Nations Cup. Sweden was able to set itself apart a little more from Germany and won the domestic dressage Nations Cup.

Germany

The venue for the German Nations Cup in several equestrian disciplines was also Aachen in 2019 . The German Nations Cup of Dressage took place in the second week of the CHIO Aachen (July 16-21, 2019). The competitions were held in the Deutsche Bank Stadium .

Traditionally, the Nations Cup mode consisting of Grand Prix and Grand Prix Spécial with addition of the percentages is chosen in Aachen. The decision was clearer than last year, as the two strongest couples in the United States (Kasey Perry-Glass / Dublet and Laura Graves / Verdades) did not start tournaments in the year before the Summer Olympics. The German team, which was able to show results of over 79 percent in both Grand Prix and Grand Prix Spécial, lacked serious competition.

Helen Langehanenberg's stallion Damsey remained well below his level of performance in the Grand Prix , so the couple missed his chance to be nominated for the European Championships in Rotterdam . The best result of a foreign participant in both tests went to Charlotte Dujardin with third place. The Briton competed in Aachen with the Trakehner Erlentanz , which her student Sonnar Murray-Brown had made available to her for the duration of his injury.

For the first time ever, an Irish dressage team took part in Aachen. That first visible sign of Irish ambition to qualify for the Olympic Games bore fruit a month later at the European Championships.

United Kingdom

The last stage of the 2019 season took place as part of the British Nations Cup dressage tournament. Together with the Royal International Horse Show Jumping was the tournament Dressage at Hickstead from 25 to 28 July 2019 in Hickstead aligned. The tournament was advertised as CDIO 3 *.

Part of the Nations Cup in Hickstead was the Grand Prix (with three or four riders per team), the Grand Prix Spécial (with two team riders each) and the Grand Prix Freestyle.

In addition to two experienced couples (Lara Butler / Rubin Al Asad and Hayley Watson-Greaves / Rubins Nite ), the host British team comprised two less experienced rider-horse pairs (young rider and young horse). The inexperienced pairs of the British team stayed in the Grand Prix with their results well below 70 percent. The addition of the three best British riders resulted in 15 points. The British were already three points behind Portugal, whose best riders finished second and third in the Grand Prix.

In the Grand Prix Spécial on July 27th, Great Britain started its weaker pairs. João Miguel Torrao and his Lusitano Equador (75.787%) won the test by a clear margin ahead of his compatriot Duarte Nogueira (71.851%). In the Grand Prix Freestyle on the final day, Lara Butler and her 17-year-old Rubin Al Asad clearly won (78.260%), and Hayley Watson-Greaves also placed third with 73.245%. But the Portuguese also showed good performances in the freestyle with second and fourth place. As a result, victory in the Nations Cup went to Portugal with a six point lead. The Netherlands and Ireland followed behind in third and fourth place.

Overall rating

Although the number of stages had increased to eight, only the four best results from each nation were included in the overall standings in the 2019 season. Two nations were affected by this regulation, each of which had the result of a Nations Cup canceled. A new record was set with 16 nations taking part in at least one nation's cup of the tournament series.

With the third overall victory in a row, Sweden was the new sole record winner of the Nations Cup.
