32 teams of the first group phase step into eight groups (A-H) of four teams in a round robin ( English Round Robin ) with return game against each other. The two best teams in each group qualify for the second group stage.
In the second group phase, another round-robin tournament with a round trip will be played in four groups with four teams each. Of these 16 participants, the eight group winners and runners-up in the second group phase as well as the eight “relegated” from the group phase of the Basketball Champions League 2017/18 (fifth and sixth place of the four groups there) qualify for the round of 16, from which the knockout stage o. system was continued. The game is played in a knockout system, the addition of the results from the first and second leg counts. Consequently, a tie result in the first leg, which only serves as an interim result, is possible and only a tie result after adding both game results makes an extra time necessary in the second leg to determine a winner. This mode is held until the finals to determine the title winner.
Attendees
Twelve national champions take part in the first group stage of the FIBA Europe Cup. However, these national champions come from leagues that are insignificant in European comparison. No team from the major leagues such as the Spanish, Greek or Italian takes part. Only clubs from the VTB United League that missed the playoffs last season there take part. The only possible German representative in the first group stage would have been last year's 14th Bundesliga s.Oliver Würzburg . Würzburg failed in the qualification. The FIBA Europe Cup continues to be by far the worst of the four European Cup competitions in terms of quality.
qualification
The qualification was played back and forth and started with the first leg of the first round on September 20, followed by the second leg on September 27, 2017. The following week, the first leg of the second round took place on October 4 and the second leg on October 11, 2017.
1The teams reached the group stage as lucky losers , as three places became available at short notice.
First group stage
The first group stage matches took place between October 18 and December 6, 2017. For teams with the same number of wins, it was not the total point ratio that was decisive for the group placements, but only the added result in a direct comparison of the teams with one another.
The second group stage matches took place between December 20, 2017 and February 7, 2018. For teams with the same number of wins, it was not the total point ratio that was decisive for the group placements, but only the added result in a direct comparison of the teams with one another.
In addition to the eight teams qualified in the second group phase of this competition, this round also includes other teams from the Basketball Champions League who finished fifth or sixth in the group phase and thus missed the knockout phase in that competition. However, since some teams have refused to continue playing in the FIBA Europe Cup, the best third-placed teams in the FIBA Europe Cup move up for them. The draw for the entire knockout phase will take place on February 14, 2018.
The games in this phase begin on March 6th with the first leg of the round of 16 and end on May 2nd, 2018 with the second leg of the final. The knockout phase was drawn separately.
The following teams are qualified for the knockout phase:
From the round of 16 onwards, the knockout system will continue to play in a two-legged manner. The first legs took place on March 6 and 7, the second legs on March 13 and 14, 2018.
