Ferdinand Ernst Wilhelm August von Schmiedeberg (born April 3, 1778 in Halberstadt , † January 24, 1824 in Schönborn ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

The Schmiedeberg family comes from Thuringia , from where they came to Pomerania and Neumark . The family was already a member of the Brandenburg Army. His parents were Karl Ludwig von Schmiedeberg (1732-1802) and his wife Christiane, née Strobach (* 1746; † May 13, 1800). His father was a Prussian captain a. D. , last in the infantry regiment "Duke of Braunschweig" , and prince-bishop forester in Ottmachau , later in Pusterwitz / Silesia.

Military career

Schmiedeberg was educated by Pastor Gohl from Glatz , then by the rector in Nimptsch , where he went to the city school. On December 1, 1792 he came as a standard junker in the cuirassier regiment "von Schlitz" and took part in the battles near Cracow , Putow and Novemaisk during the campaign in Poland in 1794 . On November 1, 1798 Schmiedeberg was promoted to second lieutenant. In the fourth coalition war he was in the defense of Neisse .

After the defeat of Prussia and the peace of Tilsit , he was promoted to staff commander of the army on July 26, 1808 . King Friedrich Wilhelm III. awarded Schmiedeberg on September 3, 1808 for his achievements at Neisse with the order Pour le Mérite . On March 17, 1809 he was transferred to the 2nd Silesian Hussar Regiment (No. 6) and aggregated to the regiment on May 1, 1809. In mid-June 1809 he received permission to enter the service of others.

On June 23, 1811 he was again aggregated to the 2nd Silesian Hussar Regiment (No. 6) and promoted there on August 12, 1811 with a patent from July 26, 1808 to the captaincy and appointed to the squadron chief. On August 15, 1812 he was promoted to major and served as the leader of the two non-mobile squadrons of his regiment in the campaign of the year .

During the Wars of Liberation Schmiedeberg fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Dresden , Leipzig , Laon , Paris , Ligny , Belle Alliance and the battles near Haynau , Ebersdorf, Passendorf and Sezanne. For Großgörschen he received the Iron Cross II. Class and the Order of St. Vladimir IV. Class. At Passendorf he acquired the Iron Cross 1st class. In 1813 he was entrusted with the command of the 2nd Uhlan Regiment . On April 9, 1814 Schmiedeberg was promoted to lieutenant colonel and appointed regimental commander. In addition, on April 24, 1814, he got permission to wear the Swedish Order of the Sword . On March 17, 1815, he received the Russian Order of Saint Anne II. Class and on October 3, 1815 with a patent from October 25, 1815, he was promoted to colonel.

In 1818 Schmiedeberg received the French Military Merit Order , before he was adopted on September 27, 1821 with the character of major general and 800 thalers pension . He died on January 24, 1824 in Schönborn near Breslau and was buried on January 27 in Kurtsch.

family

He married Emilie Reinhart (* 1792; † 23 August 1857) in Schwanowitz (Brieg district) on November 24, 1814. She was a daughter of the Amtsrat Leopold Reinhart, Herr auf Schwanowitz and Schönborn. The couple had several children:
