The Mar del Plata airport (officially Aeropuerto Internacional Astor Piazzolla) is an Argentine airport near the city of Mar del Plata in Buenos Aires province . The airport is named after the composer Astor Piazzolla from Mar del Plata .
history
In 1948 a military base was built in Mar del Plata, which was expanded into an airport in the following years. In 1978 the terminal was built in the course of the soccer World Cup in Argentina, and it was expanded again for the 1995 Pan-American Games . Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 has operated the airport since 1998 . The airport was renovated again for the America Summit in 2005 . In 2008 the airport was given its current name, previously it was named after Brigadier General Bartolomé de la Colina .

Incidents
- On January 16, 1959, a Curtiss C-46A of Austral Líneas Aéreas ( aircraft registration LV-GED ) flew into the sea while taking off from Mar del Plata airport. Only one of the 52 occupants survived.
