La Tontouta Airport or Nouméa - La Tontouta Airport ( French : Aéroport de Nouméa - La Tontouta) is the main airport of New Caledonia in the municipality of Païta , about 52 kilometers northwest of the city of Nouméa . In 2006, 415,813 passengers used the airport. The airport is operated by the airport operator Tontouta Air Service (TAS). Aircraft are serviced here by TAS (Tontouta Air Service) and Air Calédonie International. Customs , immigration police , airport police , civil aviation services and a meteorological station are housed at the airport .

It is also used as a military airfield by the French armed forces in New Caledonia. The air forces refer to it as Base aérienne 186 Nouméa and the Navy as Base aéronavale de Tontouta .

The airport was created in 1941 by the Forces françaises de l'intérieur and taken over and expanded by the US armed forces after the outbreak of the Pacific War . Between 1969 and 1975 Tontouta was only a reserve site. It was then reactivated, modernized and reopened in 1976. Control was transferred to the French Armée de l'air in 2011 .

Military use

The military area of ​​the airport used (as of 2011) Detachments of the Escadrille 22 with Alouette III and 25F with Falcon 200 Gardian der Aéronavale and the Armée de l'air has a liaison team here, the l'escadron de transport outre-mer (ETOM 00.052) stationed. It is equipped with helicopters ( Fennec and Puma ) and Airbus CN235-200 transporters.

There is no direct connection to France. Air France offers flights with transfers in Tokyo, Osaka or Seoul (codeshare with Aircalin).

Airport facility

The airport is open 24 hours a day. It offers a passenger terminal, a cargo terminal and five aircraft grandstands. Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI), rotating radio beacons (VOR) and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) are used as navigation aids , the Instrument Landing System (ILS) corresponds to Category I. The approach lighting consists of Runway Edge Lights - High Intensity Runway Lights (HIRL ). The airport fulfills fire class 7 and ICAO category A. The maximum aircraft size specified is a Boeing 747-400 .

Passenger facility

The airport has an annual capacity of 2 million passengers with 13 check-in counters and five gates. There are 320 pitches for short periods and 120 for longer periods. There is also an airport hotel, a post office, a bank with a money changer, various restaurants, cafeterias and bars, a VIP lounge, several shops, a travel agency, several car rental companies (Avis, Budget, Hertz, ACINQ, Thrifty and Nouméa Technic Auto ), two taxi companies and a baby-parent room.

Disabled facilities

The airport is equipped with an entrance for the disabled, ten parking spaces for the disabled, an elevator and a ramp, as well as a toilet for the disabled.

Cargo facility

The cargo area has a bonded warehouse, aircraft maintenance, automatic clearance, a cold store, a deep-freezer, a fresh meat inspection, health officials, an X-ray scanner and nebulization equipment.
