history
In 1938, the City of Norfolk built Norfolk Municipal Airport on Truxton Manor Golf Course with a 3,500- foot runway and the former clubhouse as the terminal building. It opened on April 7, 1938. After Pennsylvania-Central Airlines , which became part of United Air Lines in 1961 , Norfolk had been added to its route network, a new terminal was inaugurated in 1940.
In 1942 the United States Army Air Corps took over the airport. In order to be able to handle the high number of flights and the larger aircraft, the Air Corps extended the runway and built two more. In 1947 the airport was transferred back to the city of Norfolk and civil air traffic resumed.
In 1948 Piedmont Airlines took regular connections to Cincinnati ; In the same year, construction work began on a new terminal building, which was inaugurated in 1951. In 1968, Norfolk was designated the airport of the Hampton Roads region and renamed Norfolk Regional Airport .
After the airport received a new terminal building in 1974 and customs clearance facilities in 1976, it was renamed Norfolk International Airport in 1976 . In the 1980s, Norfolk Airport was expanded to include a new General Aviation Terminal and a new Air Freight Terminal ; the passenger terminal was expanded in 1991 and an arrival building was added in June 2002.
