Foho Taroman

The Foho Taroman ( Taroman Mountain ) is 1744  m ( 1730  m according to another source ) the highest mountain in the East Timorese municipality of Cova Lima . It is located in the Suco Fatululic (Administrative Office Fatululic ), which owes its name to the mountain. The cliffs characteristic of Timor are called fatu (derived from the Tetum word Fatuk for "rock"). The word lulic (or lulik ) means "holy". "Fatululic" thus means "holy cliff" or "holy rock". In the past, the Foho Taroman was a place where animistic rites were performed.

On the northern slope of the mountain is the so-called " Game of Thrones " rock , a limestone formation that reminds of the throne from the Fantasy series with its knife-like structure.

Around the mountain is one of the few cloud forests in the country with an area of 20 km² . It reaches from a height of 1000  m to the summit and also encloses several villages, such as the village of Fatululic .

So far 53 different bird species are known in the region. 23 occur only in the Timor and Wetar region, one is considered critically endangered. In addition, a native land mammal species, six bat species (including the Canuts horseshoe bat ), which eat insects, a species of the smooth night skink ( Eremiascincus ) and the immigrant black- scarred toads ( Bufo melanostictus ) are known. A species of snail that has not yet been scientifically described, which resembles Parachloritis manuelmendesi , can also be found here.

The number of plant species is estimated at 300 to 500. The largest trees in the cloud forest are usually Dacrycarpus imbricatus with a height of up to 30 m. The boat fern ( Angiopteris evecta ) is one of the 50 ferns . The moss and lichen flora has hardly been researched.

The main threat to this biologically rich landscape is free-grazing domestic animals, especially cattle. In addition to damage to tree roots and ground vegetation, this causes soil erosion and a deterioration in water quality.

history

From 1976 the Taroman was a retreat for the FALINTIL , who fought against the Indonesian invaders, and civilians who fled Cova Lima. Here they founded a base de apoio , a resistance base. The politician Abel Pires da Silva was born here.
