Just Eat Takeaway (initially Citymeal ) is an international online provider of delivery services for restaurants based in Amsterdam . The company, founded in 1999, organizes the ordering and delivery of meals offered by partner restaurants through its online portals and is available under various names in twelve European countries ( Belgium , Bulgaria , Germany , France , Luxembourg , the Netherlands , Austria , Poland , Portugal , Romania , Switzerland and the United Kingdom ) as well as Israel and Vietnam .

history

Jitse Groen, 2015

As part of a family celebration, the 21-year-old student Jitse Groen wanted to order food on the Internet in 2000 and could only find a restaurant list in Amsterdam. So he came up with the idea of developing an online portal that bundles various delivery services. On the same day, Groen acquired the domain Thuisbezorgd.nl (for Dutch thuis bezorgd , in German about home delivery ). The delivery service went online that same year. In 2008 the company also started operations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

In 2010, Thuisbezorgd.nl was renamed Takeaway.com and the company launched in France and the United Kingdom. In a 2012 financing round, Takeaway.com received EUR 13 million from Prime Ventures . In 2014, the takeover of the German competitor Lieferando.de for 50 million euros followed.

In 2018 Takeaway.com took over the Swiss online portal Foodarena.ch from its competitor Delivery Hero . At the end of 2018, Takeaway.com announced that it would also take over its German services Lieferheld.de , Foodora and Pizza.de . The purchase price was just under 1 billion euros.

With this takeover, the McDelivery service was also transferred to Lieferando.de in April 2019 .

Just Eat Takeaway has been part of the AEX index since June 2019 .

At the end of July 2019, Takeaway.com announced that it would buy its UK competitor Just Eat . The takeover was announced in early August 2019. Just Eat shareholders received 0.09744 Takeaway.com shares per share . The merger was worth just under 5.5 billion euros. With a good 52 percent who received Just - Eat 's shareholders the majority in the new company, while the previous Takeaway.com 's shareholders retained nearly 48 percent. The new group will be called Just Eat Takeaway.com . In January 2020, there was news that the UK competition authority would review the takeover.

On June 11, 2020, Just Eat Takeaway announced the takeover of Grubhub .

service

Takeaway.com acts as an intermediary between the customer and the restaurant. The customer can order dishes via the stationary online portal or mobile app . The ordered food is delivered directly to the customer. In large cities this is done via Takeaway.com suppliers , then the delivery can be tracked via GPS, in small towns the restaurants usually take care of the delivery themselves. The customer can choose between different payment methods, either cash or online (by credit card , instant transfer , PayPal or Bitcoin ). For every order placed, Takeaway.com receives a commission from the restaurant. However, the intermediary services are criticized for the level of commissions.
