action
Ben "Finn" Finnegan is a treasure hunter obsessed with finding legendary treasure. On July 24, 1715, a fleet of ships with treasures started from Havana in the direction of Spain and disappeared seven days later in a hurricane . Finn tries to find their precious cargo on the ocean floor. During his hunt for the treasure, however, his marriage with his wife breaks up and she divorces him.
One day he discovers a shard of a plate on the bottom of which the family coat of arms of the family of one of the captains of the Spanish fleet can be seen, and thus for the first time has a decisive clue as to the coordinates of the treasure. While recovering the Shard, his boat explodes and sinks. This gives him trouble with a gangster named Bigg Bunny, who gave him 62,000 US dollars lent to repair the ship.
When the wealthy Nigel Honeycutt anchors his luxurious yacht near the island, Finn tries to convince him to become his new investor. He learns that his ex-wife Tess works as a stewardess on his ship. Both manage to convince Honeycutt that he will finance their search. But since Finn had to leave the found shard to his former financier Bigg Bunny in the meantime, he has now got a clue about the location of the treasure and joins Finn's former treasure hunter colleague Moe Fitch to also look for the treasure do. By evaluating other written sources in a church, Finn and Tess reinterpret the story and discover that the treasure was carried from the ship to the island's grotto, which is inaccessible for most of the year due to the surf.
They actually succeed in recovering the treasure, and finally they both confess their love for one another and marry again.

Reviews
On Rotten Tomatoes , the film was rated with an overall rating of just 10% from 139 counted reviews, and among the 30 top critics it even received the worst rating of 0%. The overall consensus was: "With little chemistry among the actors, humorless gags and a predictable plot, the film fails on every level."
James Berardinelli wrote on Reel Views : The ones in the comedy How do I get rid of him - in 10 days? The already inconsistent chemistry between the main characters has almost completely evaporated in this film. McConaughey looks like a burnt out surfer in dire need of a shower, shave, and haircut. Kate Hudson is a little flat (which relates to her performance and not her other attributes), but that is the story of her career following her role as Penny Lane in Almost Famous . Both main actors would also seem passive.
Gebhard Hölzl wrote on Monsters and Critics : “Scavenger hunt, love story, swimwear show or underwater adventure? The authors John Claflin and Daniel Zelman, already responsible for the groundbreaking screenplay for Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid , may not really make up their minds. Symptomatic of this is the (involuntarily funny) scene in which Finn and Tess explain why the Spanish ship once sank and where. It takes ten minutes and then as a viewer you know just as much / little as before. […] 'Fool's Gold' is the original name of the slapstick, translated as 'fool's gold' - does the title refer to the entrance fee? "
The lexicon of international films judged: "An honest mixture of screwball comedy and adventure film, which varies genre standards, but does not find an original approach to the subject despite the impressive actors and settings."
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating “valuable”: “Refreshing, how the cliché of the brisk stupid is broken again and again, only to be used again, only to break it again. Such lightness does not necessarily make this comedy a treasure trove of film history, but it lifts it out of the monotony of cheap dozen comedies. This is a varied popcorn cinema that works, doesn't really hurt anyone but the bad guys and almost always entertains the audience very well. "
