Forest seed kiln in Jatznick

The forest seed bender Jatznick is a forestry facility for the seed supply and belongs to the state forest of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is located in the eponymous municipality of Jatznick in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in eastern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is a technical monument .

tasks

The forest seed bender pursues two corporate goals: seed processing and storage as well as tourism use. Initially, the range consisted exclusively of seeds for pine trees , but was expanded over the decades to include other conifers , from 1991 to include deciduous trees , shrubs and fruits. In the kiln , seeds from shrubs and trees are deposited on five floors and in 168 boxes with a capacity of 3.5 tons of pine or 800 kilograms of Douglas firprocessed and marketed. In 2013 the offer included more than 90 tree and shrub species. On behalf of the state forest administration, the facility takes on the drying, processing and storage of forest seeds. Private customers can take advantage of a wage cycle and have forest seeds and shrubs processed and stored. The stratification is also possible. A foam manufactory shows how the seeds of conifers were obtained with historical equipment in the past. In the museum there is a permanent exhibition “Historical and modern on the subject of seed cakes and seed processing”, which is supplemented by an annually changing themed exhibition. There is also a dendrological garden, a herbarium , a labyrinth and the possibility of a ride on a handcar .

history

The Treaty of Versailles undertook Germany after the First World War to the performance of large reparations . Part of these services consisted of large deliveries of wood to the coal fields in Belgium and France . In Pomerania and Brandenburg in particular, deforestation resulted in large bare areas that had to be reforested . In order to provide the necessary seeds in large quantities, the forest seed machine in Jatznick was built between 1922 and 1923 under the direction of the government and building councilor Kuno von Pentz . As the Prussian state forest, it came into the possession of the Prussian state. As a so-called safety kiln , the structure was divided into two parts: It consisted of a wooden, three-storey storage facility for cones and a three-and-a-half storey kiln building attached to the south-west , made of brick . Using the countercurrent principle, warm air generated here rose in the kiln and cooled down in the process. This ensured the optimal oven temperature of 60 to 70 ° C. By means of lamellas in the facade , a largely constant air humidity was achieved inside .

Despite extensive fire protection measures , a fire destroyed the kiln and the cone store on the night of December 28, 1935 . In the following spring, reconstruction began by the Rambow steam sawmill and construction business from Ferdinandshof . With the help of an exchange contract , the company supplied the necessary timber and in return received 1.6 times the amount from the forest. The renovation was used to add a fourth and fifth storey to the peg store and at the same time to install an electric elevator from Eifrück & Heldemich , which is still in operation today. In addition, improved fire protection flaps were installed. In 1937 the kiln started up again. Towards the end of the Second World War , an air raid by the Red Army on the adjacent train station destroyed the residential and service buildings and thus prevented the further production of seeds.

With the administrative reform of 1952 in the GDR , the kiln came to the Torgelow forestry company . Despite the lack of maintenance measures, the kiln produced seeds again from 1953 - in 1955, for example, 5,860 kilograms with a value of 203,450  marks . But it wasn't until ten years later that the urgently needed new social building with company apartments was built . In 1967 there was a defect in the furnace, as a result of which the kiln was unable to produce seeds for almost a year. In 1973 a new cold room was built, which was in operation until 1998. In 1990 - due to German reunification - the state forestry companies were dissolved and replaced by forestry offices in 1992. The kiln came into the state property of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A year later it was included in the list of monuments of the Pasewalk district . In 1998 new cold rooms were installed in the cellar of the cone store. In that year the Förderverein Samendarre Jatznick e. V. Among other things, the association advocated the integration of the kiln into the tourism development of the region. In 2001 a cooperation agreement was signed by the Minister for Agriculture, Till Backhaus , and the District Administrator of the Uecker-Randow district , Siegfried Wack . This envisages the expansion of the kiln into a "site of historical production, communication, teaching and encounter". A year later, planning began, which included extensive renovation measures and new buildings. Between 2004 and 2006, the state invested around 3.2 million euros. In 2007, the renovation work on the building was completed.
