Francisco González (born November 19, 1955 in Wiesbaden , Germany ) is a retired Paraguayan tennis player .

Life

González was born in Wiesbaden, where his father was stationed as an officer at the US military base. He grew up in Puerto Rico and studied at Ohio State University , where he was voted into the top selection All-American .

He became a professional tennis player in the late 1970s and won his first double title on the ATP World Tour in Sydney in 1979 . In the same year he managed a second double title. In 1980 he celebrated his greatest career success in singles, when he reached the final of the Masters tournament in Cincinnati by defeating the highly popular Jimmy Connors , but lost to Harold Solomon . After a less than successful year in 1981, he won his third double title the following year at the side of Matt Mitchell , his best single result was the semi-finals at the Japan Open. In 1983 he won four double titles, the following year another three more, including the Cincinnati Masters. In addition, he was in his second individual final this year, but lost to Eliot Teltscher in Brisbane .

In 1985 he reached the mixed final at the French Open with Paula Smith , but lost there against Navrátilová / Günthardt in three sets. In 1986 he was in the double-finals of three other tournaments, but he could not win any more tournament victories. In total, he won ten ATP double titles in the course of his career, and another ten times he was in a double final. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1978 with position 49 in singles and 1984 with position 24 in doubles.

His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was participation in the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 1981. In the doubles competition, he reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open , the French Open and the US Open , and in Wimbledon he made it to the second round twice.

González played for the Paraguayan Davis Cup team between 1982 and 1989 . Together with Víctor Pecci , they won the South America group with group wins against Peru , Uruguay and Ecuador . In the subsequent playoff against the winners of the North American group Canada , they qualified for the world group, where they advanced to the quarter-finals over the next three years. His greatest successes with the team included individual victories over Andrés Gómez , Tomáš Šmíd and Henri Leconte , as well as a win over the Swedish doubles of Stefan Edberg and Anders Järryd .
