Francesco Piccolomini (born October 12 . Jul / 22. October  1582 greg. In Siena ; † 17th June 1651 in Rome ) was the 8th General of the Society of Jesus .

Life

Francesco Piccolomini , a member of a famous noble family that also provided two popes, joined the Jesuit order on January 26, 1600. He taught philosophy at the Roman College and wanted to go to the Indian mission. Since the long-standing and successful Order General Mutio Vitelleschi held him in high regard , he had to stay in Rome and served the Order as General Secretary. Later he also acted as a visitor in Sicily, headed the religious college in Rome and acted as provincial of Naples, Milan, Rome and Venice. When Vincenzo Carafa , the 7th General of the Order, died on February 8, 1649, the General Assembly of the Order on December 21 of the same year elected Piccolomini to be its 8th General.

Franz Joseph Ritter von Buß called him in 1853 in his book "Die Gesellschaft Jesu" a man of "invincible firmness with great piety and humility" . Karl Heinrich von Lang , influenced by the Enlightenment, wrote in his work "History of the Jesuits in Baiern" in 1819 that Piccolomini was "inflexible and stubborn" .

The Jesuit general was mostly ailing in the last years of his life and died of a painful stone disease. On the day of his death, he appointed Goswin Nickel , his successor but one, as administrator of the generalate. Piccolomini died in Rome on June 17, 1651. Aloisius Gottifredi was elected as his successor .
