Franz Anton Leopold Pontz
Franz Anton Leopold Pontz Freiherr von Engelshofen (born December 26, 1692 in Vienna , † February 2, 1761 in Vienna) was sergeant general (1734), lieutenant field marshal (1741) and master of the imperial army (1754) and commanding general of the Temesch Banat (1740 -1757).

Franz Anton Leopold Pontz came to the Banat in 1717 during the Venetian-Austrian Turkish War (1714–1718) , where he was appointed captain in 1720 . From 1727 he was first lieutenant colonel , then commander of Pantschowa . In 1731 he was raised to the status of Herbländisch - Austrian baron . After the death of Johann Sprung in 1733 he became the fortress commander of Timisoara . At the same time he was Deputy Governor of the Temescher Banat Claudius Florimund Mercy . In 1737 Pontz von Engelshofen joined the field army , and in October of the same year he became the commandant of Orschowa and then of Esseg . In 1738 he became a member of the Vienna Court War Council . In 1749 Pontz was the owner of the Slavonian - Syrmian hussar regiment and in 1754 Feldzeugmeister.
In 1740 Pontz was appointed commanding general of the Temescher Banat. He held this position until he moved to Vienna in 1757. As governor of the Banat, he continued the settlement of the Temescher Banat. During this time (1744) he set up the Banat land militia. He settled the first Italians in the Banat. In this way he settled the Caran-Puszta and founded the place Mercydorf , which was named after the Banat governor Claudius Florimund Mercy .
In 1751 the Empress Maria Theresa introduced civil administration in the Temescher Banat. Pontz headed the civil administration from 1751 to 1753, when he was replaced by Francesco de Paula Ramond Villana-Perlas de Rialpo .
During his presidency, Pontz pushed ahead with the construction of the Timisoara fortress, which Mercy had begun, made possible the construction of the Citizens Hospital , the first city hospital in Timisoara, led the construction of the Roman Catholic cathedral , the cornerstone of which took place in 1732 during the presidency of Johann Andreas Graf von Hamilton , and was involved in the reconstruction of the decaying thermal baths of Herkulesbad .
In 1757 Pontz moved to Vienna, where he became city commander of the Archduchies of Austria on the Enns and Austria under the Enns . In Vienna he had a house on Wollzeile and one in Alservorstadt .
