Freeman is an unincorporated community in the Unorganized Territory of East Central Franklin , in Franklin County of the state of Maine in the United States .
Freeman is centrally located in Franklin County. With another township, this area was given by the state of Massachusetts as a grant to the victims of the Portland fire when it was set on fire by the British during the American Revolutionary War . The original name for this area was Township No. 3, Second Range North of Plymouth Claim, West of Kennebec River (T3 R2 NPC WKR) . The area was later organized as the Little River Plantation .
On March 4, 1808, the area was organized as a town and was named Freeman, after Samuel Freeman of Portland, one of the main owners of the area. In 1937 the town was disorganized and Freeman went up as an unincorporated community in the East Central Franklin area.
A headwaters of the Sandy River , a tributary of the Kennebec River , has its source in the area and flows south.
In Freeman, the Barn on Lot 8, Range G was placed under monument protection in 2011 and under the register no. 11000581 listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
