Friedrich Johann Daniel Alois von Zoller , from 1816 Freiherr von Zoller (born May 25, 1762 in Baden-Baden , † February 25, 1821 in Regensburg ) was a royal Bavarian lieutenant general .

Life

He came from an originally Alsatian family, whose ancestor Jacob Zoller had been elevated to knightly imperial nobility in Vienna in 1674 .

Since his father was in command of the Régiment royal allemand des Royal Deux-Ponts as a colonel in French service , Friedrich was educated in the pagerie of the chief of this regiment , Duke Charles II August of Pfalz-Zweibrücken. On April 8, 1779 he was appointed second lieutenant in this regiment and took part with him in the American War of Independence (1775–1783). After he was promoted to prime lieutenant and later to adjutant major , the future elector and Bavarian King Maximilian I called him back to his homeland after the outbreak of the revolution and signed him to his bodyguard regiment . With this Zoller took part in the staff of the Prussian general Friedrich Ludwig Prince von Hohenlohe-Ingelfingen in the years 1793/1794 in the coalition war against France . Then he came into the electoral Bavarian service in 1799 .

A little later he fought again in 1800 in the Second Coalition War as a major in the Wrede battalion against France. On the night of March 5th to 6th, 1800, he was seriously wounded in the battle of Messkirch and lost an eye. When the war against Austria broke out (1805), he led a corps of mountain rifles as a lieutenant colonel on the Tyrolean border . For his services there he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor and the Military Max Joseph Order .

In the campaign of 1806/1807 against the Prussians , he commanded a light colonel Infantry - Regiment , 1809 in wars against Austria and in 1812 in the campaign against Russia , he was also a colonel and regimental commander . In the course of this Russia campaign he was promoted to major general and brigadier .

On the march back to Bavaria, new troops were formed in Plotzk on the Vistula from the remains of the Bavarian regiments . Zoller was given command of the 2nd Royal Bavarian Infantry Brigade , with which he entered Thorn on January 20, 1813 and took over the occupation of the city. On April 18, he handed over the city and returned to Bavaria.

On 30./31. October Zoller fought on the side of the allies in the battle of Hanau , was promoted to lieutenant general and division commander and then entrusted with the management of the siege of the Hüningen fortress , which was not implemented until April 14 of the following year after King Louis XVIII was recognized. ended. In 1815 Friedrich von Zoller again led an infantry division into the war, but was hardly ever used.

On January 30, 1816, Friedrich von Zoller was enrolled in the Freiherrnklasse in recognition of his services in the Kingdom of Bavaria .

The Bavarian Lieutenant General Oskar von Zoller (1809–1866) was his son.
