European Football Championship for Women 1989 / Qualification

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The qualification for the European Women's Football Championship in 1989 was held from September 10, 1987 to November 6, 1988 . All registered national teams had to go through the qualification, because the host of the final tournament was only determined at short notice from among the four semi-finalists after the quarter-finals.

A total of 17 national teams took part in the qualification. The selection teams were divided into three groups of four and one group of five teams. Within the groups, each team played each other twice. The group winners and the runners-up qualified for the first-ever quarter-finals.

Northern Ireland did not take part this time, but Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia took part in the qualification for the first time.
