European Women's Football Championship 2005 / Qualification

The qualification for the European Women's Football Championship 2005 took place from March 26, 2003 to November 27, 2004 .

A total of 34 national teams took part in the qualification. The teams are divided into two categories. The category A teams are fighting for places at the 2005 European Championship, while the category B teams are fighting for promotion to category A. For the first time, the host ( England ) did not have to qualify.

20 teams play in category A, divided into four groups of five teams each. Within the groups, each team plays each other twice. The group winners are automatically qualified for the European Championship. The runners-up and the two best thirds in the group determine three further participants in the first and second leg. The bottom of the group play with the group winners and the best runners-up in Category B in a round trip to see if they can stay in Category A.

The remaining 14 teams play in category B, divided into a group of four and two groups of five teams each. Within the groups, each team plays each other twice. The group top and the best runner-up play with the bottom of the group in category A in a round trip for promotion to category A.

Armenia , Kazakhstan and Malta took part in a European Championship qualification for the first time. For this, the reported Turkey no team.

Relegation

The UEFA said the relegation matches on short notice. For qualifying for the 2007 Women's World Cup , UEFA increased Category A from 20 to 25 national teams. Therefore, Greece, Ireland, Austria and Belarus are rising.

Trivia

  • After 16 defeats in a row, Estonia celebrated their first victory in a European Championship qualification. This ended the longest series of defeats in the history of European Championship qualification.
  • In its first appearance, Armenia set a new negative record for category B with 53 goals conceded without a goal of their own (when there were no two categories, Slovenia set the still existing record of 0:60 goals in 1995).
  • In addition, Armenia set the record for Slovenia with three double-digit losses .
