The vice world champion of the football world championship in 1970 marched through the World Cup qualification without endangering. With four wins and two goalless draws, they didn't even concede one goal. The Turkey and Switzerland were to Italy to make too weak to qualify dispute.

Italy was seeded during the group draw and faced Poland, Argentina and newcomer Haiti. Italy were eliminated on points with Argentina in the preliminary round. They started the tournament as the big favorite of the group and after the defeat against Poland they were bid farewell to Germany by the Tifosi with insult and shame. Italy's exit at home was compared to its exit from the 1966 World Cup .
