Although Oleknavicius' first name is actually Gintaras , the German sports press consistently called him Günter . Oleknavicius' nickname in his childhood was Ginta , which sounded like Günter to German ears , which gave rise to his later common nickname.

career

The junior player Günter Oleknavicius, who came to VfL Neckarau from the Mannheim district club TSV Schönau , came in the 1969/70 season under the training direction of Philipp Rohr and alongside his teammates Gernot Rohr and Gerd Störzer with the blue-whites from the Altriper ferry to the runner-up in the 1. Amateur League North Baden. In the competition for the German Amateur Championship , Neckarau failed in the semifinals against defending champion SC Jülich in 1910 . For the round 1971/72 he accepted the offer of VfR Frankenthal from the football regional league Southwest and played for the team from the northern Palatinate. He made his debut on August 15, 1971 at the home game against Phoenix Bellheim in the Regionalliga. The round ended with a 3: 3 home draw on May 7, 1972 against champions Borussia Neunkirchen . Oleknavicius scored two goals against opposing midfielders Gerd Zewe and Jürgen Papies . He had played 28 league games and scored eleven goals for the eleven from the Ostparkstadion. Frankenthal was relegated to the amateur camp as 15th.

The technically good midfielder was able to remain in the second division of the regional league thanks to the offer from Fortuna Cologne. From the 1972/73 season he was part of the team of Fortuna President and patron Jean Loering in the West Regional Football League . "Olek" Oleknavicius made his debut under coach Ernst-Günter Habig on July 30, 1972 at the home game against 1. FC Styrum in the Regionalliga West. The midfield of Fortuna was occupied by Oleknavicius, Rolf Bauerkämper and Wolfgang Glock . With the coach Martin Luppen , who was in office from November 1, 1972 , Fortuna reached the runner-up in the Regionalliga West with 50:18 points and thus made it into the promotion round. The newcomer from Frankenthal had completed 31 rounds (3 goals). The Loering kickers beat FC St. Pauli , 1. FSV Mainz 05 , Karlsruher SC and Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin with 13: 3 points and made it into the Bundesliga. Günter Oleknavicius, alongside fellow players like Wolfgang Fahrian , Karl-Heinz Struth , Gerd Zimmermann , Hans-Günter Neues , Noel Campbell , Bauerkämper, Glock, Helmut Bergfelder and Friedhelm Otters, had played all eight games in the promotion round and scored four goals. In the 2-1 victory at the start on May 23, 1973 in front of 40,000 spectators in the Wildpark Stadium against Karlsruher SC, he scored the 2-0 lead for Cologne and made one of his best games.

The following year, the 1973/74 season , Oleknavicius played 28 times and scored one goal for the newly promoted team. Now, however, Martin Luppen no longer trained SC Fortuna, but Löring had entrusted the two former athletes Volker Kottmann (until December 31, 1973) and Willi Holdorf (from January 21, 1974) with the sporting direction. Oleknavicius and colleagues started on August 11, 1973 in the Bundesliga with a 1: 3 away defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Fortuna was in 17th place at the end of the season, tied with Wuppertaler SV , who stayed in the league due to the better goal difference. On the 34th matchday, Cologne lost 4-0 at Kickers Offenbach and Wuppertal, which was one point worse, equalized with a 2-2 draw at VfB Stuttgart. Oleknavicius went down with Fortuna in the newly created 2nd Bundesliga . But the Bundesliga relegated failed in 1974/75 despite the additions with Johannes Linssen and Roland Hattenberger with the fifth place the immediate promotion. Even the change of coach at the turn of 1974/75 from Luppen to Heinz Hornig did not make the turn in the promotion race. The midfielder had played 27 games in the 2nd Bundesliga and scored one goal.

By moving to Kickers Offenbach for the 1975/76 season, he returned to the Bundesliga. On the Bieberer Berg, however, the coach Otto Rehhagel (until December 9, 1975) and his successor Zlatko Čajkovski in the Kickers midfield relied on the actors Hermann Bitz , Josef Hickersberger , Manfred Ritschel and Rainer Blechschmidt . So Oleknavicius only came to 13 other Bundesliga appearances.

In his other stations in the 2nd Bundesliga he made it to the side of teammates such as Eckhard Deterding, Gerhard Reinbold, Jochem Ziegert (KSV Baunatal); Hubert Genz, Dieter Schwemmle (FC Hanau 93) as well as Dieter Agatha, Juan Alvarez and Josef Sarocca at FSV Frankfurt to another 97 league games in the 2nd Bundesliga with 13 goals.

After the end of his active career, Oleknavicius trained several teams in the regional league - including in Limburg, Seligenstadt and Alsenborn - and then worked as an advertising agent and freelance sales representative.

He is the younger brother of the cyclist Algis Oleknavicius .
