The Steinach is a 22 km long creek, calculated from its source furthest from the mouth, in the border area of northwestern Bavaria and northeastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the Tauber from the right and east near Bieberehren in the district of Würzburg . Its upper reaches are the right Grimmelbach and the left Gailshofenerbach

geography

Right upper reaches Grimmelbach

The right source creek Grimmelbach der Steinach arises next to the district road 43 from the Gallmersgarten village Mörlbach to the Uffenheimer Kirchdorf Custenlohr a little before their entry into the Hardt at about 409  m above sea level. NHN and runs as a ditch next to a dirt road only half a kilometer southwest. It bends south for half of this distance in front of the Lindenau forest , takes up a similarly long ditch on this piece from the left and then reaches its flat floodplain basin running west throughout, in which it separates from paths and its first more significant inlet from the left from the Kautau forest .

Then it crosses the street of Ohrbach and the associated wasteland Landthurm a little to the left of the course, where a land tower of the Rothenburger Landhege used to offer passage through the boundaries of the territory of the imperial city to the north of Hinterpfeinach , which belongs to Uffenheim ; here and a little afterwards two more trenches run towards him from that direction. A little later, the Grimmelbach, which previously ran along a few small pieces of forest, steps with its floodplain between the large beech wood in the north, in which the nearby relics of an approx. 4 hectare Celtic jump testify to early settlement in the area, and a smaller forest in the South, from which a stream runs towards it again and in which there is a smaller jump. After a little more than a kilometer further run, it meets the Gailshofenerbach coming from the left shortly before the A 7 running through the woods and joins it after a run of 3.7 km to the Steinach.

Left upper course Gailshofenerbach

The left source brook Gailshofenerbach der Steinach arises under the name Bodenwiesgraben southeast of Ohrbach on the edge of the forest island Walzerlohe at about 421  m above sea level. NHN . From here it flows towards the village, takes in a small tributary from the left shortly before it, touches it in the east and is strengthened by an influx that arises in it after the village. Then it runs in a wide meadow basin first north, then north-west and after 2.9 km flows at the Ohrbach sewage treatment plant with the not half as long left Brühlgraben , which is created on the edge of the Ohrbach village of Gailshofen . The resulting Gailshofenerbach then has a run of 1.2 km and touches the edge of the forest on the right bank for almost this entire stretch.

After about half of this distance, the 1.6 km long Herbisgraben , which is also created on the edge of Gailshofen, flows again from the left , then the Gailshofenerbach runs north, crosses under the embankment of the A 7, picks up the inflow of a pond at the corner of the mouth and unites after a total of 4.1 km with the left Grimmelbach to Steinach, which then continues west in the Grimmelbach direction.

course

The at about 368  m above sea level. The Steinach formed by the NHN crosses under the motorway, runs west towards Langensteinach and soon leaves the forest behind. Shortly before the parish village, the 4.6 km long Buchholzbach flows out of the eponymous large forest north of the Grimmelbach and the Steinach above. In the village, which lies in the now noticeable valley basin, the Selbach joins from the left, followed by the Heimbach from the right.

The brook and valley now deepen further and meander slightly in their westward course between forests on the plateaus to the left and right, into which the district road 43 enters. The 7.1 km long Harbach then flows from the left, it is the longest Steinach tributary ever. Between heights that are open again, the Steinach then reaches the Simmershofen town of Equarhofen , in the middle of which the Wallmersbach flows from the homonymous town of Uffenheims 6.1 km upstream in the northeast. After the parish village, the stream reaches the state border with Baden-Württemberg at the associated pit mill, on whose route the Freudenbach, which is about a kilometer shorter, flows from the left .

On the following northern wedge of the town boundary from Creglingen to Bavaria, the brook passes the village of Frauental on the right, which lies with the remaining parts of the Cistercian convent Frauental on a small, flat northern spur. About two and a half kilometers down the stream it crosses the Creglingen hamlet of Niedersteinach and shortly thereafter and about 60 m below the steep right spur of the associated Brauneck castle ruins, it takes on its last major stream, the 2.5 km long Sechselbach .

From here the state border commutes around the course of the brook, but below the Altmühle, which belongs to Reinsbronn close to the left in a small side valley, the brook finally crosses into Bavaria, into the municipality of Bieberehren . Less than a kilometer downhill it reaches the right valley floodplain of the Taubertal, which is moving northwards here, runs another half a kilometer in it at an acute angle towards the river and then flows less than a kilometer southeast of the eponymous settlement of the community at almost 250  m above sea level. NHN from the right and finally south-southeast into the Tauber . From the confluence of its source streams, it has a run of about 18.2 km behind it, from the source of the Bodenwiesgraben furthest from the mouth it is even 22.3 km.

Catchment area

The Steinach has a catchment area of 85.4 km². It extends from the Mörlbach – Custenlohr road in the east to the confluence with the Tauber at almost 250  m above sea level. NHN in the far west over 17 km wide, has a constant width of up to 7 km to the state border at Equarhofen and then wedges. The plateau into which the stream cuts itself soon after its source branches meet, drops noticeably from east to west and from south to north. At the eastern edge of the catchment area near the Grimmelbach spring, the site reaches a height of 418  m above sea level. NHN , in the east of the southern watershed against Gickelhäuser Bach and Tauber, which flows at one point less than a kilometer away, even at 425  m above sea level. NHN , elsewhere apart from the valley cuts it remains consistently over 340  m above sea level. NHN .

From the northwest to the north to the northeast, the catchment area borders on the somewhat larger Gollach , which flows a little downwards in Bieberehren into the Tauber. In the east, beyond the nowhere very striking watershed, the Aisch competes , which initially runs in the opposite direction to the east to the Regnitz . In the south it runs against the receiving Tauber itself and its much smaller right tributaries, of which the Gickelhäuser Bach, which is created as Scheckenbach in Oberscheckenbach near the sources of the Bodenwiesgraben, exceeds a length of 5 km.

Steinach from the confluence of the source streams:

geology

The two upper reaches of the Steinach begin in the loess sediment layer of the Unterseuper , at their lowest sections they are in the Unterseuper. At the confluence of the two, the valley floor just reaches the Upper Muschelkalk , which soon takes up most of the slope downstream. in the lowest valley shortly after the Reinsbronner Altmühle the bed is then in the Middle Muschelkalk , into which the Steinach also flows.

Approximately from the eastern edge of the Creglingen village of Freudenbach, a fault line runs northwest to the hamlet of Sechselbach, but it stops where it crosses the Steinach valley.

Landscape image

The Steinach flows through an undulating arable landscape, which is interspersed with several forest islands of varying sizes. Its narrow valley on the upper reaches from Langensteinach initially only offers a few small fields, further down, more and more fields reach the shore. From about the Fuchsberg at the Fuchshof below Frauentals, stone bars overgrown by hedges set in on the right slope, interrupted by a few wooded areas, which continue to the entrance to the Taubertal. The forest is more common on the slope opposite on the south side, the hedges, which are not uncommon here, usually run parallel to the height lines. Almost everywhere outside of the few settlements in the valley, a wood gallery accompanies the stream itself. The banks of the two source streams, on the other hand, are mostly bare.
