" Gee " is a song by the K-pop girl group Girls' Generation . The song was first published digitally in Korean on January 5, 2009 in South Korea for download . The EP Gee came out two days later on January 7th. With the song, the group set a new record in the KBS telecast Music Bank on by reaching the top spot nine consecutive weeks.

On October 20, 2010, a Japanese version of "Gee" was released as a single .

From the end of December 2008, numerous South Korean media reported the return of the girls' generation in January 2009 after a nine-month break. From December 26, 2008, the new mini-album and the song were advertised through various teaser posters in Seoul , as well as a 25-second video. After its release, the song immediately garnered a lot of attention and immediately reached number one on the hourly Cyworld charts and six other online music charts.

From the end of September 2010, Japanese radio stations played the new Japanese version of "Gee". On October 6, 2010 the new music video was released and finally on October 20, 2010 the single was released in three different versions.

Information about the song

"Gee" is a very fast pop song and is about a girl who fell in love for the first time. The title “Gee” is an expression of surprise, similar to “Eomeona!” ( 어머나 ! , Oh, my God! ). The song was written by the South Korean producer duo E-Tribe . The Japanese text is from Kanata Nakamura.

Music videos

There are three different music videos for "Gee". The first came out on January 7th, 2009. Minho from SHINee plays a salesman in the clip. The music video shows the nine members of Girls' Generation as mannequins in a fashion store . When an employee of the shop closes and leaves, the mannequins come to life. The music video was viewed more than 190 million times on YouTube (as of December 2017).

The other two music videos are dance versions, one in the clothing store and the other set against a white background.

On October 6, 2010, a Japanese version of the music video was released that differs only slightly from the Korean one. Minho also plays the clerk again.

Chart placements

With the song "Gee" the group broke several records in South Korean music shows. For example, “Gee” achieved first place at KBS Music Bank for nine consecutive weeks , more often than any other musician before. Girls' Generation also replaced the Wonder Girls in the music portal of the station Mnet by taking first place eight times in a row. According to the South Korean music portal Melon, "Gee" is the best K-Pop song of the decade (2000–2009).
