Georg Ernst Franz Heinrich Graf von Waldersee (born October 22, 1824 in Berlin ; † October 30, 1870 near Le Bourget ) was a Prussian colonel and commander of the Queen Augusta Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 4 .

Life

Georg was a grandson of Count Franz Waldersee (1763–1823), an illegitimate son of the Prince (from 1806 Duke ) Leopold III. von Anhalt-Dessau from a connection with Johanne Eleonore Hoffmeier. He was the first of six children of the later Prussian general of the cavalry Franz Heinrich von Waldersee (1791–1873) and his wife Bertha Wilhelmine Friederike, born von Hünerbein (born March 20, 1799 in Berlin; † January 24, 1859 in Posen ). He was the older brother of the Prussian field marshal and chief of staff Alfred von Waldersee .

Military career

On August 12, 1841, Waldersee joined the 1st Guard Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army as a Second Lieutenant . On December 2, 1851, he was commanded as an adjutant to the command of the Guards Infantry, and on October 11, 1853, he was promoted to prime lieutenant. This was followed by a command to the Great General Staff on October 30, 1855 . When he was promoted to captain , Waldersee was transferred there on April 22, 1856. In mid-July 1858 he came to the General Staff of the 6th Division in Brandenburg an der Havel . As a major , he was transferred to the General Staff of III in early July 1861 . Army Corps . During the war against Denmark in 1864 Waldersee was involved in the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen and the transition to Alsen . For his achievements he received the Order of the Red Eagle IV. Class with Swords and the Order of the Crown III. Class with swords.

In mid-December 1864, Waldersee returned to the General Staff and received a troop command six months later. He became battalion commander in the Guard Fusilier Regiment and in this capacity was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 18, 1865 . As such, he successfully led his association against the Austrians in the battles at Königinhof and Königgrätz in 1866 . For this, Waldersee was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords.

After the peace treaty he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the XI on October 30, 1866 . Army Corps in Kassel and promoted to colonel on April 18, 1867 . As such he was appointed commander of the 4th Guards Grenadier Regiment "Queen" on January 13, 1870. With this regiment , Waldersee went to war against France in 1870 . He was seriously wounded in the Battle of Gravelotte and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. After his recovery he took part in the siege of Paris and fell on October 30, 1870 at Le Bourget .

Waldersee was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

family

On October 27, 1856, Waldersee married Laura von Knoblauch (* September 12, 1836 - December 27, 1904), daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm von Knoblauch (1798–1852) and Pauline von Bardeleben (1811–1884) in Pessin . The sons Friedrich Wilhelm Franz Georg (1860-1932) and Franz Georg Kurt Eduard (1862-1927) emerged from the marriage.
