Germinal Casado (born August 6, 1934 in Casablanca , Morocco , † March 26, 2016 ) was a Spanish ballet dancer and director .

life and career

Casado first trained in graphics and art history , which is why it was said that he saw dance through the eyes of a painter. Casado didn't start dancing until he was 18 years old. He made his dance debut in 1955 with the dance company " Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas ". In 1957, Casado was hired by Maurice Béjart for his company " Ballet du XXe siècle " ("Ballet of the 20th Century") as the first solo dancer and set designer. He became a close associate in the company's management. This collaboration lasted thirteen years. The performances there took him to all the major stages in the world.

From 1977 to 1998 he was ballet director, choreographer and set designer at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe . During this time he created lavishly equipped ballets. He also founded the ballet company " Danza Viva " there, for which he designed and choreographed more than 60 ballets. With this ensemble he went on tour in Europe, Asia and America. In 1990, Germinal Casado was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany for his special merits in promoting the reputation of German culture abroad . Until 2003 Casado was engaged in various dance companies , first as a dancer, later as a choreographer and set designer .

Casado traveled a lot across Europe. He was often engaged for several seasons in one of the following cities: Monte Carlo , Brussels , Cologne , Amsterdam , Paris , Liege , Liverpool , Antwerp , Maastricht , Lille , Charleroi , Trier , Lisbon , Strasbourg , Darmstadt , Mainz , Arnhem , Athens , Barcelona , Berlin , Mexico City , Milan , The Hague , Lyon , Florence , Karlsruhe , Hanover , Essen , Toulouse , Hamburg and Krefeld . His success also earned him engagements at the festivals in San Sebastián , Edinburgh , Avignon , Santander , Bad Gandersheim and others.

Casado also worked for Moroccan, Belgian and French television. He lived on Lake Orta in Italy and was an active observer of the dance scene.

His estate is in the German Dance Archive in Cologne .

Casado can be seen in the Belgian documentary Bhakti , released in 1969 .

In 2008 Casados memoirs with 60 photos were published under the title Germinal or Le sacre du printemps , ISBN 978-3-7650-8385-3 ., By Braun G. Buchverlag in Karlsruhe.
