Gilbert Clements

Gilbert Ralph Clements , O.PEI (born September 11, 1928 in Victoria Cross , Prince Edward Island , † November 27, 2012 in Montague , Prince Edward Island) was a Canadian politician . From 1995 to 2001 he was Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island.

Short biography

Clements owned a home appliance trading company and later worked as a real estate agent. After several years of local politics, he ran as a member of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party in 1970 with success in the elections to the legislative assembly . He was then re-elected six times in a row. Clements held several ministerial posts: in the government of Alex Campbell he was minister for communities, environment and tourism from 1974 to 1978, under Joe Ghiz from 1986 to 1989 minister of finance and culture and from 1989 to 1993 finance and environment minister. In 1981 he held the party chairmanship on an interim basis and was thus opposition leader. Governor General Roméo LeBlanc swore in Clements on May 28, 1995 as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. He held this representative office until May 8, 2001.
