Gordon Lockhart Bennett

Gordon Lockhart Bennett , OC (born October 10, 1912 in Charlottetown , Prince Edward Island , † February 11, 2000 ) was a Canadian politician . From 1974 to 1980 he was Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island.

Bennett studied chemistry at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown and at Acadia University in Wolfville . After teaching in elementary schools for five years, he taught at Prince of Wales College from 1939. As a member of the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party , he ran successfully in the 1966 legislative assembly elections . In 1970 and 1974 he was re-elected. During this time, Bennett held several ministerial posts in Alex Campbell's administration : he was Secretary of Education from 1966 to 1972, Minister of Justice from 1970 to 1974, and Provincial Secretary from 1972 to 1974. In 1966/67 he also presided over the Canadian Curling Association. Governor General Jules Léger sworn in Bennett on October 24, 1974 as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. He held this representative office until January 14, 1980.
