biography

She studied singing and organ playing at Mount Allison University . In 1965 she moved to Prince Edward Island with her husband Nelson Hagerman. The mother of two taught in schools in Summerside, where she lived, and in Charlottetown . Hagerman was the vocal soloist with the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra . From 1986 to 2003 she directed the Summerside Community Choir and had numerous appearances with it in eastern Canada, including in 1997 at Carnegie Hall in New York City .

At the proposal of Prime Minister Stephen Harper , Governor General Michaëlle appointed Jean Hagerman as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island on July 12, 2006. This appointment has been criticized as clientelism and a favor on the part of the Conservative Prime Minister. Her husband Nelson Hagerman had been treasurer of the provincial section of the Conservative Party of Canada and a conservative lobby organization and financial advisor to the Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party until shortly before taking office on July 31, 2006 .

Hagerman's term ended on August 15, 2011; she was succeeded by Frank Lewis .
