Jedediah Slason Carvell

Jedediah Slason Carvell (born March 16, 1832 in Newcastle , New Brunswick , † February 14, 1894 in Charlottetown , Prince Edward Island ) was a Canadian politician . From 1879 to 1889 he was a Canadian Senator , after which he served as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island until his death .

After his school days in Saint John and Fredericton Carvell lived temporarily in Australia , from 1855 in the USA , where he worked as a timber merchant. In 1860 he settled in Charlottetown and built a successful import and export company. As the publisher of The Examiner newspaper , he campaigned for the colony to join Canada. In the years 1877 and 1878 he was mayor of Charlottetown, he also represented the interests of Spain in the province as vice-consul . In December 1879, he was appointed Senator , in the Canadian Parliament he belonged to the Conservative parliamentary group. Governor General Lord Stanley swore in Carvell on September 2, 1889 as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. He held this representative office for four and a half years until his death.
