Donald Alexander MacKinnon
Donald Alexander MacKinnon , KC (born February 22, 1863 in Uigg , Prince Edward Island , † April 20, 1928 in Charlottetown ) was a Canadian politician . From 1901 to 1904 he was a Liberal MP in the House of Commons , then until 1910 Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. After all, from 1921 to 1925 he was a member of the House of Commons a second time.
biography
When MacKinnon, son of Scottish immigrants, was 14 years old, he began teaching in various rural schools. He later studied law at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown and Dalhousie University in Halifax . In 1887 he was admitted as a lawyer and opened a law firm in the village of Georgetown , from 1897 he worked in Charlottetown. In 1900 he became President of the Prince Edward Island Bar Association.
MacKinnon's political career began in 1893 when he successfully ran for a seat in the Legislative Assembly for the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party . Prime Minister Donald Farquharson appointed him as Attorney General in the provincial government in 1899 , but MacKinnon lost the statutory by -election . He then turned to federal politics. As a candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada , he won the general election in 1900 , but the result was declared invalid in his constituency due to inconsistencies. In the repetition in March 1901, he also won.
In 1904 MacKinnon decided against re-election. He had previously informed the Canadian Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier that he did not have enough money to be able to conduct politics. Laurier showed his appreciation and proposed him as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. Governor General Lord Gray swore in MacKinnon on October 3, 1904. He held the representative office until June 1, 1910. He then worked again as a lawyer. He also presided over an electricity company and the provincial Boy Scouts . A gifted author, MacKinnon wrote reports for magazines and edited a historical encyclopedia . In the general election in 1921 , he was elected again and stayed another four years deputy.
