The Ericsson Globe (until 2009 Globenarena also Stockholm Globe Arena , short form in Swedish Globen ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Johanneshov district ( Enskede-Årsta-Vantör district ) of the Swedish capital Stockholm . The building belongs to the Globen City area .

history

The globe arena was inaugurated on February 19, 1989 as the largest spherical building in the world. The arena has a diameter of 110 meters and a height of 85 meters. The steel , concrete and glass construction, designed by the architects Berg Arkitektkontor AB , is supported by a MERO space structure.

The building has a volume of 605,000 cubic meters. The maximum usable area is 75 meters × 45 meters and holds 13,850 spectators for ice hockey games . There is room for 16,000 people at music shows. In the upper area there are 40 VIP - boxes and a restaurant. Next to the hall is the Globen underground station . The Ericsson Globe also depicts the sun as part of the world's largest, full-scale model of the solar system, the Sweden Solar System .

In 2000 the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 was held in the hall . The final of the Swedish preliminary decision for the ESC, the Melodifestivalen , took place here in 1989 and from 2002 to 2012. The audience record was held by the heavy metal band Metallica on May 5, 2018 with 16,858 visitors.

On February 2, 2009, a sponsorship agreement was signed between the Stockholm Globe Arena and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson and the building was renamed Ericsson Globe .

The SkyView inclined elevator has been in operation since February 2010 . There the roof can be reached on the outer shell in one of two glass gondolas with space for 16 passengers each.

On July 8, 2015, the European Broadcasting Union announced that the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 will take place for the second time in the Globe from May 10 to 14, 2016.

Globe City

Globen City is an area in the Johanneshov district . It includes event venues, a shopping center with 60 stores and a hotel. The old Söderstadion was part of it until the demolition .
