Gotthard Wilhelm Freiherr Marcks von Würtemberg , since 1720 Marcks von Würtemberg , since 1759 Freiherr , ( Swedish Gotthard Vilhelm former Marcks von Würtemberg ; * May 4, 1688 in Riga ; † February 17, 1778 in Gotthardsberg , Södermanland ) was a Swedish field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Gotthard Wilhelm was a member and co-founder of the Swedish aristocratic family Marcks von Würtemberg , as well as the founder of the baronial line of the same.

He was raised to the Swedish nobility in 1720 together with his brother, the Swedish lieutenant colonel Carl Gustaf Marcks (1693–1775) and introduced to the knightly class of the Swedish knighthood (No. 1726). In 1759 he was raised to the Swedish baron class and in 1776 introduced to the baron class of the Swedish knighthood (No. 263).

His parents were from Bremen originating fortress treasurer in Tallinn , Parnu and Tartu Johann Marcks (1640-1710) and Anna Margareta, born (from) Rehausen (1659 to 1741).

His first marriage in 1710 was Anna Elisabeth, nee Hauenschildt, widowed Wrangel (1678–1743), a daughter of the Swedish major general Detloff Hauenschildt († 1703). In 1744 he went into a second marriage with Elisabet Freiin Gyllenstierna af Lundholm (1713–1798). The two marriages resulted in a total of five sons and one daughter.

Career

Marcks first studied in Pernau before he volunteered in the Swedish service of the garrison in Pernau in 1699 and was promoted to head of the fortress in 1703.

He then entered the French service in 1705 as an ensign in the Régiment de Royal Suèdois under Erik Sparre af Sundby (1665–1726) and fought in the War of the Spanish Succession in the battles of Ramillies , Oudenaarde and Malplaquet, among others . During this time he received his promotion to lieutenant and secondary captain .

When he was returned to Sweden in 1710 he regimental quartermaster under Karl von Nieroth († 1712) and captain in Nylands Infantry Regiment. In the same year he rose to major in the regiment . He was adjutant general in the Jutland army in 1717 and in the same position in the Stockholm army in 1719. As early as 1718 he had participated in the Norwegian campaign under Carl Gustaf Armfelt (1666–1736) and distinguished himself several times during this. After his ennoblement, Marcks von Würtemberg became a lieutenant colonel in the Karelian squadron in 1727 and a colonel in the Jämtlands dragoon regiment in 1739 . He was promoted in 1747 to major general of cavalry , received in 1750 the Seraphinenorden and was in the same year regimental commander of the Södermanland Regiment. He rose to lieutenant general in 1751 and general of the infantry in 1755 . The baron status was followed in 1763 by being appointed field marshal. In 1772 he received his farewell .

Marcks von Würtemberg was hereditary lord on Högsrum in the parish of Fliseryds, Kalmar Lan . He was buried in the church at Lebro, Södermanland, where an epitaph has been preserved.
