Reign of Roussy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The rule Roussy was a fiefdom around the castle Roussy in today's Roussy-le-Village between Thionville in the south and Luxembourg in the north. It originally belonged to the property of the Counts of Luxembourg and was given to the Ligny branch line , for which the French title Count von Roussy (Comte de Roussy) was created in 1495 . In the context of the other titles that were run in the family, that of Comte de Roussy never played an important role.

Regardless of the title, ownership of Roussy developed. While the French title of count was inherited in the male line, the German rule Roussy itself was from 1568 in the hands of a granddaughter of Count Charles II († 1530), Magdalena von Nassau-Idstein. Roussy was now inherited or sold several times by will until it was owned by Marie Antoinette Philippine de Custine (1746–1800) at the outbreak of the French Revolution (Roussy had belonged to France for 20 years), who with Albert Louis Baron de Pouilly et de Chauffour (1731–1795) was married, and the Comtesse and Comte de Roussy called themselves. In 1790 the couple went into exile, after which the property was confiscated. The couple took the name Mensdorff in order not to be recognized in the event of a possible capture by republican troops, and settled in Austria. Her descendants are the (from 1818) Counts von Mensdorff-Pouilly and (from 1869) the Princes Dietrichstein zu Nikolsburg.

The Savoyard Roussy, who were awarded the (Sayovian-Sardinian) title of Marquis de Roussy in 1857, have nothing to do with the rule of Roussy or with the title of Comte de Roussy.
