Project 885 Jasen ( Russian Ясень ; German “ash”), NATO code name Graney , sometimes also referred to as the Severodvinsk class , is the most modern class of Russian nuclear-powered submarines .

Development and construction

In 1977 the Soviet Navy commissioned the development of a new class of submarines as a successor to the 671RTM Щука (Victor III class) boats . The design office Malachit (Малахит) in Leningrad was commissioned to plan the new submarine . The draft of Project 971 (NATO code name Akula II ) served as the basis for the new boat . After the actual planning was completed in 1985, the design was completely revised. The Soviet Navy now wanted a multipurpose submarine with missile armament. After the draft was revised, work began on the first boat on December 21, 1993 in the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk . The launch of this boat was planned for 1998. Due to financial problems of the shipyard, the work was stopped in 1996. It was not until 2003 that further financing for the K560 Severodvinsk was secured and the work continued. During the construction stop as well as during the second construction phase, changes were made to the design again and again, so that completion was further delayed. Finally, after 17 years of construction, the K560 was launched on June 15, 2010. After further delays, the sea trials began on September 12, 2011. In 2011, the Russian naval fleet placed the order for the construction of four more boats. On November 26, 2012, K560 launched a P-800 Oniks anti-ship missile for the first time . On June 17, 2014, the K560 entered service with the Northern Fleet .

A boat takes around eight years to build and costs around $ 3.5 billion per boat. Due to the long construction time and the high costs, the number of boats is initially limited to seven units. As a cheaper alternative, Russia has begun planning the next generation of nuclear submarines, the Husky class .

description

Side elevation of Project 885.

In contrast to Project 971, Project 885 boats are single-hulled boats . The boat hull is made of steel and niedermagnetischem is probably eight or nine insular divided departments. The boat has a bow sonar with spherical perception. The boats of Project 885 are said to be considerably quieter than the second series of Project 971. One of their most important properties is the missile armament. For this, 8 vertical launch modules are installed in two rows in the fuselage between the tower and the stern . Each of these launch modules can be equipped with up to 3 rockets. So up to 24 anti-ship missiles or cruise missiles can be carried on board.

Technical specifications

  • Security chamber for the entire crew
  • Armament:
    • Launch container: 8 vertical take-off modules for anti-ship missiles or cruise missiles
    • Torpedo tubes: 8 × 533 mm
      • Combat kit: 30 torpedoes SAET-60M, USET-80 , UGST , WA-111 "Schkwal ", mines, RPK-6 Wodopad missiles or guided missiles 91R . The guided weapon is a combination of a rocket propellant and an APR-3ME or MPT-1ME anti-submarine torpedo.
  • Ship systems (SONAR):
    • MGK-600 Irtysh-Amfora
