Mission data submarine

Project 10831 ( Russian Лошарик , Loscharik ) is an experimental, nuclear-powered research submarine of the Russian Navy . Both the identifiers AS-12 and AS-31 were used as names in media reports on an accident in July 2019.

description

Project 10831 is an unarmed, deep-diving submarine for special operations. It was built and operated in great secrecy, so much of the technical data is unclear. Hence the boat is also known as a spy submarine. Few photos exist; One of the sharpest recordings is from 2014 and was probably made by chance while filming an episode of the Russian branch of the TV show Top Gear near Arkhangelsk .

The pressure hull of the submarine, in which the crew resides and which contains the most important technical facilities, should, similar to the configuration of the namesake Loscharik, consist of spheres lined up along the longitudinal axis of the boat , which can withstand extreme pressure due to their shape and the Boat to enable an above-average diving depth. It is estimated that Loscharik can be used in water up to 1000 meters deep. Other speculations assume up to 6,000 meters.

Accident on July 1, 2019

On July 1, 2019 around 8:30 p.m., a fire broke out on board, according to media reports based on anonymous Russian military sources. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 14 seafarers were killed on July 1st during exploration work in Russian waters on an unspecified submarine as a result of a fire. The affected boat was then apparently able to head for a base of the Northern Fleet near Severomorsk on its own .

According to official information, five seafarers are said to be receiving medical treatment, while according to Russian press research, the majority of the victims died on the way to hospital or shortly afterwards. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, seven of the victims are said to have held the rank of captain 1st rank , which corresponds to the rank of naval captain . Such a high concentration of senior officers on a small submarine is extraordinary , according to Kyle Mizokami of Popular Mechanics magazine . The exact course of the accident remains unclear, according to official announcements a fire broke out in the battery department. However, according to witness statements during the funeral ceremony, a military representative said in his speech that the action of the dead prevented a catastrophe on a planetary scale.

The Russian magazine Lenta.ru also speculated about the background to the mission in which the accident apparently occurred . The official version that the crashed boat was on a mission for bathymetric survey work is possible, but implausible, because the area directly in front of the Kola Peninsula , near the border with Norway, should already be well known to the Russian Ministry of Defense and in The use of “Loscharik” would not be particularly efficient in the 300 meter deep waters. The most likely explanation is therefore that "Loscharik" was switched off to place stations for the underwater location system "Garmonija", which is to be used similar to the US SOSUS and whose implementation is planned for 2020.

Commemoration

The 14 dead crew members were buried in the Serafimovskoye Cemetery in Saint Petersburg . On July 5, 2020 - a year later - a memorial was inaugurated there in her memory.
