history

The remote valleys of the Montes de Toledo were almost uninhabited for a long time and thus remained untouched by the great events of Iberian history. They served as summer pastures for sheep and goats, so it is not surprising that a shepherd from Cáceres discovered a figure of Mary here around 1300, around which numerous legends soon grew up: This is what the image of Pope Gregory is said to have been around the year 590 the Great was sent to Seville and hidden here after the Moors came to power (around 715). After its rediscovery several hermitages (ermitas) arose , but soon afterwards - after the victorious battle of the Salado - the Castilian king Alfonso XI took himself . (r. 1312-1350) initiated the building of a church and a monastery, which took a huge boom after the discovery of America - numerous places, islands, etc. in the Spanish colonial empire were called Guadalupe . Guadalupe has been one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Spain for almost 700 years; the figure of Mary venerated here is considered the "Queen of Spain" all over the world.
