Hagen is a district of the city of Sundern (Sauerland) in the Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia with approx. 920 inhabitants.

Location and description

The place is about 10 km from the city center of Sundern. What is remarkable is the street village layout, which is unusual for the Sauerland .

history

In 1296 the place was mentioned for the first time as freedom . Count Ludwig von Arnsberg endowed the place with Lippstadt town charter based on the model of Eversberg . According to Caspar Christian Vogt von Elspe , the place used to be called Stiegenhagen. The unpaved Hagen was one of the first freedoms in Westphalia. It was a straight one-street system. The vila nova was a planned new settlement in cleared area. The St. Nicholas Church was mentioned for the first time in 1310. However, this was dependent on the community in Stockum .

In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period , iron ore mining was carried out in and around Hagen . The Justenberg copper mine was of particular importance at times . In the 16th century, 60 houses were counted. After two fires in 1817 and 1845, the place was rebuilt as a street village . Most of the houses had a massive basement and a timber-framed upper floor. In these gable-facing farm houses, the residential part is on the street side and the commercial part is on the back. Because of its almost exclusively agricultural structure in the late 19th and 20th centuries, the place is also known as Kuhschisshagen .

On January 1, 1975, Hagen was incorporated into Sundern (Sauerland).
