Hanna
Hanna is a female given name of Hebrew origin. The name is less common as a family name . The spelling Hannah , which is based on the transliteration of Hebrew, predominates in the English-speaking world .
Origin and meaning
In Abrahamic religions
The name in Hebrew is Channa (Hebrew חַנָּה). It is the feminine form of the word chen (Hebrew חֵן, “grace”, “grace”). On this semantic basis there are other name formations, especially the name John ( Jochanan , Hebrew יוחנן with the meaning " YHWH is grace"). For its female form Johanna , "Hanna" can also be a short form.
There are three women in the Bible named Hanna and Hannah :
- Hannah , the mother of the prophet Samuel
- The wife of Tobit and mother of Tobias , mentioned in the book of Tobit ( Tob 1.9 EU ).
- Hanna , 84-year-old widow and prophetess Hanna in the Gospel of Luke ( Lk 2.36 EU )
Jesus' grandmother, the mother of Mary , is not mentioned in the Bible, but is known as Anna in church tradition . This name is the Greek or Latin form of Channa .
The name also appears in the story of the Jewish festival Hanukkah .
Of Sumerian origin
The name Anna probably goes back to Inanna . This is the Sumerian goddess who lived in 3000 BC. Chr. The district Eanna in Uruk itself took possession. So it is a possessive female goddess who was able to gain recognition in the city. There are also similar names to the main god An and the deity Nanna .
